Every so often, a moment comes along that can change everything. For women in sport, that moment could begin with you. As gsport celebrates the incredible milestone of its 20th edition, the call to recognise unsung heroes is louder, more urgent, and more exciting than ever.

Since 2006, the gsport Awards have stood as a beacon of recognition, honouring athletes, coaches, administrators, media professionals, volunteers, and pioneers who are changing the face of sport in South Africa. This year, the movement is growing stronger than ever.

Across the continent, passionate voices are rising to nominate game changers. From high-performance athletes to grassroots heroes, a new generation is being celebrated. Not just for their talent, but for their determination, their values, and the way they uplift others.

Take a moment. Think of someone who deserves to be seen. The one who works hard, inspires others, and rarely gets the spotlight.
When we recognise her, we don’t just honour the past, we shape the future. There are only a few days left. Nominate her now!

“Winning on the gsport stage was an honour and a privilege,” says Shamila Sulayman, 2022 Volunteer of the Year. “But the impact was even greater… this #PowerOfRecognition is a strong message. They are seen, they are celebrated, and they are recognised.”

That message is resonating deeply, with nominations arriving from every corner of the continent. First-time nominees. Quiet trailblazers. Future legends.

“There is immense power in recognition,” says Kass Naidoo.

“This year, we’ve seen an incredible wave of strong entries, especially brand new nominees who are doing exceptional work in their spaces.”

Past winners speak about the doors that opened, the confidence they gained, and how recognition helped fuel their journey. As 2024 African Woman in Sport winner, Diana Chikotesha puts it, “You opened the door and the others followed.”

This isn’t just about awards. It’s about changing lives. It’s about helping the next young girl believe her dreams in sport are valid, visible, and valued. It’s about showing the world that African women in sport are ready, and always have been.

As we launch the milestone #gsport20 campaign, we pause to reflect on a powerful tradition that has become the heartbeat of women’s sport in South Africa: 10 years of gsport Networking. All Photos: Supplied
