Not every river adventure has to involve rough tracks or steep climbs, writes Miriam Kimvangu.

From Stellenbosch to Grabouw, there are accessible spots where families, friends, or solo adventurers can enjoy a day by the water. Pack a picnic, grab a swimsuit and head out to the waiting river.

Close to town and easy to reach, the Eerste River winds through Stellenbosch vineyards. The banks offer flat grassy spots for picnics, and the water is calm enough for a gentle swim. On weekends, locals often bring folding chairs, coolers filled with snacks, and inflatable floats for children. There are public access points along Eerste River Drive, making it easy to park and walk straight to the water. If you are interested in a bit of exploration, small walking trails along the river offer shaded areas, ideal for reading a book or enjoying a quiet moment. Even early morning or late afternoon swims are peaceful, with fewer people around.

The Berg River has stretches where the current is mild and the water is surprisingly clear. Public access points near Paarl make it easy to enjoy swimming and paddling. Kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and inflatable canoes can be launched directly from the banks without climbing over rocks or mud. Local cafés and delis in town make it simple to grab a sandwich or coffee before or after a river day. Birdwatchers will enjoy spotting herons, kingfishers, and other waterfowl along the river, while photographers can capture the backdrop of Paarl’s mountains mirrored in the water.

Bonnievale has gentle stretches of the Breede River with smooth sandbanks. The wide river allows small groups to spread out without crowding. Beginners in paddling or swimming will feel comfortable here, as the water moves slowly and steadily. Public access is via paved roads that lead right to the riverbank, making it suitable even for cars without off-road capability. The scenery is a treat, with vineyards and mountains framing the river, and the area has local farms where you can pick up fresh fruit or pastries for a riverside picnic. Early mornings are ideal for kayaking, as the water is often glassy and calm.

    Krom River near Greyton

The Krom River is a smaller, quieter river ideal for those seeking peace. Public access points allow visitors to wade into the water or launch a small inflatable canoe. The river is lined with natural vegetation, creating shaded areas perfect for reading or just relaxing. Children often enjoy splashing in shallow pools while adults enjoy the scenery and fresh air. It is easy to spend a few hours here without feeling rushed, and the lack of crowds adds to the charm. Hikers can explore nearby trails that wind through the surrounding hills for a little extra adventure.

Accessible via paved roads, this river offers safe swimming areas for kids and shallow pools for paddling. Picnic tables under leafy trees make it easy to enjoy a leisurely lunch beside the water. The scenery includes mountains in the background, and the riverbanks provide opportunities for photography, sketching, or simply soaking in the surroundings. Kayaks and small boats can be launched in certain sections, while sandy banks are perfect for building sandcastles or skipping stones. A short walk along the river can reveal hidden nooks where you can enjoy solitude.

    Palmiet River near Grabouw

The Palmiet River flows through Grabouw and is reachable from public roads without a 4×4. Some sections feature calm pools for swimming, while the river’s gentle bends make it beginner-friendly for paddlers. Picnic spots with flat grassy banks make it easy to spend the day by the water. Local farms sometimes have small markets nearby, allowing you to grab fresh produce or a cold juice. Wildlife is abundant, including dragonflies, birds, and small fish in the shallow pools. A casual paddle or swim here can take up a whole morning or afternoon, with plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy the scenery along the way.
