Residents of Ekurhuleni have been left reeling from the stench of rotting fish after another massive illegal dumping incident in just two weeks.

In both cases, approximately a ton of decaying seafood was discarded, creating a severe environmental and public health hazard.

This week, the latest pile of fish carcasses was discovered near a wetland across the road from OR Tambo International Airport’s runway in Boksburg. A similar incident occurred recently near an electricity substation on Atlas Road, bordering Benoni.

Local ward councillor Simon Lapping described the situation as dire.

“The smell is exceptionally foul. Maggots are crawling all over the place, and a legion of flies are buzzing around, feasting,” he said.

Lapping warned that decomposing seafood poses significant risks, as it can release harmful bacteria such as Salmonella and E. coli. Additionally, runoff from the waste could contaminate groundwater and threaten the wetland ecosystem.

The location of the dumping site also raises serious concerns about aviation safety. The decaying fish attracts large flocks of birds, increasing the risk of bird strikes at OR Tambo International Airport.

“If birds consume the fish, then die and are later eaten by other animals, it could trigger a chain of health hazards,” Lapping added. He also cautioned that pets or stray animals coming into contact with the rotting fish could become carriers of disease.

Zweli Dlamini, spokesperson for the City of Ekurhuleni, condemned the illegal dumping and promised an investigation.

“We will be investigating this senseless act,” he said.

Lapping, who has previously helped track down and prosecute illegal dumpers, vowed to leave no stone unturned in finding those responsible.

“This is a despicable act,” he said, urging residents to report any similar incidents immediately.

He suspects that a wholesaler or retailer—not a restaurant—is behind the large-scale dumping.

“It’s more than likely a wholesaler or retailer,” he noted.

Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any illegal waste disposal to help prevent further environmental damage.
