When thinking of a safari, it is very normal for the iconic Big Five to come to mind.

While the lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino are undoubtedly the highlight of any African safari, focusing solely on them can limit your experience.

After all, Africa boasts an abundance of natural beauty and biodiversity worth exploring and enjoying.

Here’s how you can stretch your safari experience beyond the Big Five:

    Explore the Little Five

Although the Big Five may easily steal the spotlight, the ‘Little Five’ (elephant shrew, ant lion, leopard tortoise, red-billed buffalo weaver and the rhino beetle) offer a fascinating glimpse into the smaller and often overlooked aspects of our ecosystem.

These creatures play vital roles in their habitats and can be just as captivating to observe. A keen eye and a good guide can help you spot these diminutive wonders.

    Birdwatching

Africa is home to over 2,300 bird species, making it a paradise for birdwatchers.

From the vibrant African sunbird to the majestic African fish eagle, there is an abundance of avian diversity worth exploring.

A number of safari lodges offer specialized birdwatching tours where you can learn about different species, their behaviour and their habitats. Be sure to bring a pair of binoculars and have a good field guide by your side to enhance your experience.

    A dash of nocturnal magic

Consider embarking on a night safari for the opportunity to truly appreciate the nocturnal life of the African bush.
Many parks and reserves offer guided night drives where you can spot elusive creatures like hyenas and owls.

    Look into conservation and sustainability

Many safari operators are committed to conservation and sustainable tourism practices.

By choosing eco-friendly lodges and participating in conservation initiatives, you can contribute to the protection of wildlife and their habitats.

Engaging in activities such as wildlife monitoring or community development projects can offer a rewarding and meaningful aspect to your safari experience.
