Think you can handle icy waters in mid-winter? The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) is daring South Africans to take the plunge this June to help fund lifesaving operations around the country.

Timed with the winter solstice on Saturday, 21 June 2025, the longest night and the coldest time of year, the initiative invites thrill-seekers and supporters to jump into cold water to raise both awareness and money. Whether it’s a beach, dam, swimming pool, or a simple bucket of ice water, the NSRI wants as many people as possible to make a splash for a serious cause.

Why? Because when emergencies strike at sea, rivers, or lakes, NSRI volunteers are often the first, and sometimes only, line of defence. These rescue crews are on standby 365 days a year, risking their lives to save others, often in extreme conditions. And their dedication isn’t funded by government grants; it relies heavily on public donations and fundraising events like this one.

The winter plunge isn’t just about icy bravery; cold-water immersion is increasingly linked to health benefits, including stronger immunity, better circulation, and improved mental health. Still, the NSRI reminds everyone to put safety first: never swim alone, avoid rough conditions, and always have flotation gear and someone nearby who can help in an emergency.

This year’s campaign follows inspiring efforts like that of Jane Botha from Wilderness Station 23, who swam her way to raising R47 500 last year, a figure many are hoping to beat in 2025. Across the NSRI’s 50+ rescue stations, volunteers will also be jumping in to inspire others and keep the spirit alive.

    Getting involved is easy:

    • Pick a date: Plan your plunge around 21 June, or whenever it suits your schedule.
    • Start a fundraiser: Head to GivenGain and search ‘NSRI Winter Solstice Swim 2025’ to set up your campaign.
    • Spread the word: Share your plunge on social media and encourage donations from family, friends, or even your office.

And for those wondering about the financial side, donations are tax-deductible, and NSRI provides all the documentation needed.

Want to make an even bigger splash? Reach out to Renee at [email protected] or call 021 434 4011 to get support with your event planning. Visit the NSRI website to locate your nearest rescue base and discover how you can support your local station.
