As fans continue their post-mortem into the recently concluded 2024/25 Betway Premiership season, the numbers suggest how weird – possibly bad – this season was.

Mamelodi Sundowns’ dominance and the Royal AM issue aside, we saw a general lack of season-on-season improvements on a team level.

When South Africans connect, we don’t just network; we build a community. The Lekker Network is a professional network where every conversation starts with, “How can I help you?” Come join us & be a part of a community of extraordinary Saffas.

Let’s look at FIVE key questions in-depth:

How many teams improved their points from last season?

THREE – Only 3 teams had more points this season compared to last, making this the lowest number of “improvements” in PSL history.

Those teams were Orlando Pirates, Richards Bay and Sekhukhune United.

    • Fewest number of point ‘improvements’ in a season:
      • 2024/25 – 3 teams improved*
      • 2002/03, 2003/04, 2019/20, 2020/21 – 4 teams
      • Historical average – 6 teams

*The Royal AM expulsion plays a big role here, with many teams not getting the chance to play for points against them or seeing points won deducted.

How many teams improved their goals from last season?

THREE – Only three teams scored more goals this season compared to last, namely Mamelodi Sundowns (+13), Sekhukhune United (+8) and AmaZulu (+5).

This represented the lowest number of goal “improvements” in PSL history.

    • Fewest number of goal “improvements” in a season:
      • 2024/25 – 3 teams improved their goals*
      • 2002/03, 2003/04, 2019/20, 2020/21 – 4 teams

How many teams had a positive goal difference versus last season?

FOUR – Only 4 teams ended the season with a positive goal difference, the worst tally for a season in PSL history.

    • Seasons with the fewest positive goal difference teams:
      • 2024/25 – 4 teams*
      • 2004/05, 2009/10, 2010/11, 2014/15, 2017/18, 2022/23 – 6 teams
      • Historical average: 7 teams

How many teams won more than 2 games in a row at any point?

FOUR – Only 4 teams won more than two games in a row at any point this season, namely Mamelodi Sundowns (best run was 10 games), Orlando Pirates (7), Magesi FC (4) and Stellenbosch FC (3).

    • How many teams have won 2+ games in a row in the last few seasons?
      • 2024/25 – 4 teams*
      • 2023/24 – 10 teams
      • 2022/23 – 11 teams
      • Average last six years: 8 teams

How many teams won more than two away games all season?

NINE – Only 9 teams won more than two away games throughout the 2024/25 campaign – only the third time in PSL history that fewer than 10 teams won 3+ away games.

    • 2024/25 – 6 teams won just 2 away games all season*
    • 2012/13 – 7 teams
    • 2003/04 – 7 teams
