The first wave of Team SA representatives for the Region 5 Games have arrived in the Namibian capital ahead of the Region 5 Youth Games. The group departed from Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International earlier on Tuesday, writes Mark Lemke in Windhoek.

The Region 5 Games are being split across Windhoek and Swakopmund, with the next Team SA’s athletes arriving on Wednesday. The codes staying and competing in Windhoek are football, netball, basketball, volleyball, judo, boxing, karate, table tennis and  tennis. Athletics, visually-impaired athletics, swimming and Special Olympics members will be in Swakopmund.

Team SA is being represented by 198 athletes across 12 sporting codes at these Games, which are the 11th being staged and featuring 10 different countries. In the last such Games, for athletes aged under 20, Team SA topped the medals table with 106, of which 60 were gold.

Among those who arrived in Windhoek on Tuesday was the head coach of the boys football side, Vela Khumalo.

“I would first like to wish the best of luck to our Team SA athletes competing and the incredible background staff. Personally, we will be using these Games as preparation for the upcoming age group World Cup. We are taking this tournament seriously and we hope to achieve great pride for South Africa here in Namibia.”

Team SA’s boys, the reigning COSAFA champions, are in Group B with, Zambia, Eswatini and Botswana. The top two teams in each of the two groups advance to the semi-finals.
