The African National Congress (ANC) has rejected Limpopo chairperson Stanley Mathabatha’s decision to voluntarily step aside. This comes after a crucial meeting between ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula and the Limpopo Provincial Executive Committee at Luthuli House on Thursday.

Mathabatha, who also serves as Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform and is a former Limpopo premier, said his decision stemmed from what he described as “unethical practices” and misconduct within the party’s provincial structures.

He also raised concerns about processes followed during the Vhembe and Waterberg regional elective conferences, which he claimed did not align in any way with the ANC’s values.

Mbalula summoned Limpopo’s provincial leadership to urgently address Mathabatha’s announcement. While his intention to step aside was firmly rejected, the ANC resolved that the issues he raised would be referred back to the province for further discussion and resolution.

With regional conferences in Limpopo now completed, the ANC leadership is directing the province to shift its focus towards accelerating service delivery to the people.

The party maintains that unity within its ranks is critical as it moves to restore stability in Limpopo while addressing the internal divisions flagged by Mathabatha.
