The May 2026 study, conducted by South American luxury tour operator Kuoda, analysed a range of premium travel experiences to determine which offer the rarest and most personalised access.
Private jet trips claimed the top spot, with around-the-world itineraries starting at roughly $181 000 (about R3.3 million) for a 17-day journey. Travellers typically need to secure bookings at least six months in advance, reflecting growing demand for ultra-exclusive travel.
Private safari wildlife experiences also ranked among the world’s top luxury adventures, landing in fifth place overall. According to the report, luxury safaris require the longest booking lead time of any experience in the top 10, with travellers often reserving sought-after camps and lodges up to 16 months ahead.
Researchers evaluated each category using six key factors: starting price, booking lead time, level of personalisation, trip duration, online search interest and Instagram visibility. Together, the criteria measured how difficult an experience is to access and how aspirational it has become among travellers.
Private yacht charters ranked second overall. These bespoke voyages, often based in destinations such as the Mediterranean, can take up to 10 months to secure and start at around $49 000 for a week-long trip. Unlike traditional cruises, every detail is tailored to guest preferences, from dining schedules to hidden anchor points.
Private island buyouts followed closely behind, with luxury travellers paying upwards of $175 000 for exclusive-use stays. The category also generated some of the strongest social media interest, with nearly 400 000 Instagram posts showcasing secluded island escapes.
Adventure travel featured strongly throughout the rankings. Mountaineering expeditions placed fourth, driven by strong online demand and millions of social media posts documenting high-altitude climbs. Other experiences in the top 10 include heli-skiing retreats, private wellness getaways, polar expeditions and Northern Lights adventures.
The report noted that private safaris continue to attract travellers seeking highly customised experiences in remote wilderness areas. While guides and vehicles must still operate within conservation regulations and park boundaries, itineraries can be adapted around guests’ wildlife interests, preferred pace and photography goals.
According to a luxury travel designer at Kuoda, the complexity behind these journeys often goes unseen by guests.
“Pulling off a private jet journey or a polar expedition takes hundreds of hours of behind-the-scenes work for every single day the guest spends travelling. Landing permits. Fuel logistics. Crew briefings. Weather contingencies. None of it shows up in the brochure.”
The designer added that much of the cost associated with luxury travel comes down to meticulous planning and ensuring seamless execution behind the scenes.
