After the winter constituency break, Parliament is back in session with a full agenda. On Tuesday, President Cyril Ramaphosa will appear in the National Assembly to answer oral questions from Members of Parliament.

Ministers from the economic cluster are scheduled to follow on Wednesday, stepping into the spotlight for detailed scrutiny. Observers expect a week of high-intensity oversight as Parliament ramps up its legislative and oversight activities.

Digital Migration Progress Under Parliamentary Scrutiny

A key focus for the week is South Africa’s digital migration. The Department of Communications and Digital Technologies will brief the relevant parliamentary committee on its readiness for the digital switch-over, providing updates on the implementation of Broadcast Digital Migration.

Lawmakers hope the session will clarify progress, address delays, and outline the next steps toward completing the country’s transition to digital broadcasting.

The 7th legislature has adopted a rotational parliamentary programme, structuring its work into committee oversight, constituency engagement, and plenary sittings.

This approach is intended to allow MPs to focus on each of Parliament’s core functions more effectively, boosting accountability and the overall impact of parliamentary work.

Other important items on the agenda include a media briefing from the chairpersons of the Economic Services Cluster oversight committees, consideration of the Immigration Bill in the National Assembly, and a debate on Local Government Week in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP).

Additionally, Parliament’s ad hoc committee investigating corruption allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi is expected to clarify his availability to appear before September 22.
