Afrika Mayibuye Movement leader Floyd Shivambu has launched a stinging attack on South Africa’s two biggest black political parties, declaring them unfit to address the country’s worsening socio-economic crisis.

Speaking to the SABC on Wednesday morning, Shivambu said the ANC was “naturally dying” and had “fulfilled its historical mission.” But he warned that the EFF — his former political home — had become “directionless” and no better option.

“The EFF is not an alternative to the crisis of South Africa,” Shivambu said. “If anything, it will deepen the crisis. Why? Because it’s directionless and has adopted the exact mannerisms and habits of the ANC.”

The former EFF deputy president accused his old party of embracing corrupt governance practices and betraying its founding principles. He pointed to dysfunction in metros like Johannesburg, Nelson Mandela Bay, and Tshwane, where he said the EFF shielded its members from accountability.

“There were complaints about the conduct of our deployees in government. When we tried to intervene, organisational resolutions would be passed to protect wrongdoing,” Shivambu revealed.

Admitting his own shortcomings, Shivambu said his leadership style often prioritised “democratic centralism” over personal convictions. “I will never impose my individual views on the collective. Even when I disagreed, I subjected myself to the majority. That’s how I’ve always led,” he explained.

He further claimed that what began as a push for accountability and service delivery turned into a culture of self-enrichment. “We used to have weekly check-ins — how many jobs were created, what programmes were implemented for the people. That got abolished and replaced with self-enrichment mandates. That’s when I pulled back.”

With the recent launch of the Afrika Mayibuye Movement, Shivambu is pitching his organisation as a disciplined, people-driven alternative to both the ANC and EFF. He says the movement is rooted in ethical governance, African renaissance values, traditional leadership, and community development.

His remarks are expected to further strain relations with the EFF as the country moves closer to the next election cycle. Political analysts have warned of a fractured black political vote, particularly in urban metros.

The EFF has brushed off Shivambu’s criticism, saying it will not entertain his remarks. But he is confident: he insists Mayibuye will win the 2026 local government elections and ultimately claim victory in the 2029 general polls.
