    Maart double sinks Cheetahs

Winger Dylan Maart scored once in each half to help secure Griquas a place in the Currie Cup final after a convincing win at the Suzuki Stadium on Saturday.

The men from Kimberley looked the more polished of the two sides in their 25-5 victory. Griquas have had the better of their central rivals of late, with the most recent being a 40-10 drubbing at the Free State Stadium in round 6.

It took less than seven minutes for lock Albert Liebenberg to streak over the tryline for the peacock blues. Competition top-scorer, George Whitehead, made no mistake with the conversion. Then almost immediately from the restart, a brilliant individual effort from well within his own half saw Maart cross for his first five-pointer of the night.

The Cheetahs seemed to get some composure which resulted in winger Prince Nkabinde powering over to get Frans Steyn’s side on the board.

Livewire flaner Lourens ‘Vlam’ Oosthuizen could’ve extended Griquas’ lead three minutes before half time, but lost possession over the line.

Griquas started the second half like they ended the first, and capatalised on errors from the Cheetahs with Whitehead slotting a penalty in the 42nd minute to stretch their lead. Towards the end of the third quarter, Maart got his second try of the night – an acrobatic finish in the corner.

The 2023 champions simply couldn’t match the intensity of their hosts, and coupled with a dysfunctional lineout and too many handling errors and penalties, bow out at the semi-final stage once again.

Griquas now travel to Johannesburg and meet the roaring Lions in the 2025 Currie Cup final.
