There are plenty of reasons why international travel might be off the cards. Maybe the budget is tight. Maybe time is limited. Or maybe you’re just not ready to tackle the admin that comes with international travel. Whatever the reason, it doesn’t mean your travel dreams have to be paused. South Africa offers an incredible variety of destinations that can give you the feeling of being abroad. These places let you experience the world without leaving the country.
Amalfi Coast ➝ Knysna and the Garden Route
Italy’s Amalfi Coast is famous for its dramatic cliffs and seaside villages but South Africa’s Garden Route delivers a similar charm with its own wild beauty. Knysna is a highlight with its peaceful lagoon, surrounding forests and locally loved oysters. As you drive from Wilderness to Storms River you’ll find winding coastal roads, quaint towns and ocean views. Views that could easily rival their Italian counterparts. The best time to visit is between September and April when the weather is warm and perfect for outdoor exploring.

Bali ➝ KZN North Coast
If the idea of Bali’s beaches and spiritual energy appeals to you the North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal is an ideal local substitute. From Ballito to St Lucia the region offers warm Indian Ocean waters, palm beaches and a relaxed tropical vibe. You can surf at sunrise explore nature reserves by day and enjoy rich cultural experiences and spicy seafood in the evenings. The coast is at its best from May to September when the humidity drops and the days are sunny and clear.

Iceland ➝ Cederberg and West Coast
While Iceland is known for its raw landscapes and remote beauty you can find a similar sense of wonder in the Cederberg mountains and along South Africa’s West Coast. Think rugged rock formations ancient sandstone caves and long quiet stretches of coastline. Add to that some of the clearest night skies in the country and you have a destination that feels just as magical without the icy temperatures. Springtime from August to October is ideal thanks to wildflower season and milder weather.

Santorini ➝ Paternoster
Santorini is all about whitewashed charm and sunset views but you do not need to travel to Greece for that. Paternoster is a quiet fishing village on the West Coast with white cottages a blue sea and a peaceful pace of life. It is the kind of place where you can walk barefoot on the beach eat fresh seafood by candlelight and watch the sky turn pink as the sun sets over the Atlantic. Visit between March and May or September and November for calm weather and fewer crowds.
