Museums often bring to mind quiet halls, classical art, and historical artefacts.

But across Africa, you’ll also find a collection of unusual, playful, and downright quirky museums that challenge the ordinary. Whether you’re a curious traveller or just looking for something unexpected, these museums will add a unique twist to your journey.

    1. The Owela Museum – Namibia

In Windhoek, the Owela Museum blends natural history with cultural exhibits, but its most curious displays are the dioramas featuring taxidermy animals in lifelike scenes. The quirky charm lies in its slightly old-fashioned yet fascinating presentation style, which feels like a step back in time.

    2. The National Museum of Mali – Mali

Located in Bamako, this museum is small but eccentric, featuring masks, sculptures, and objects linked to the Dogon people’s rituals and myths. What makes it a unique visit is its intimate, almost home-like atmosphere, like stepping into a hidden cultural treasure chest.

    3. The Cradle of Humankind – South Africa

While technically a world-class heritage site, the Cradle of Humankind in Maropeng has some unconventional touches. Think interactive exhibits, a boat ride through the “stages of the earth,” and imaginative displays that bring evolution to life. It’s part science, part storytelling, and completely captivating.

    4. The Nairobi Railway Museum – Kenya

Train enthusiasts will love Nairobi’s National Railway Museum, where vintage locomotives and quirky colonial-era train carriages are on display. The most unusual feature? The carriage where the notorious “Man-Eaters of Tsavo” attacked workers during the railway’s construction.

    5. The Phansi Museum – South Africa

Tucked away in Durban, the Phansi Museum showcases traditional art and crafts from across Southern Africa, but with an eccentric twist. Its displays of beaded dolls, ceremonial objects, and striking masks create a colourful and eclectic wonderland that feels unique and deeply cultural.

    6. The Alexandria National Museum – Egypt

Unlike the vast and formal Egyptian Museum in Cairo, the Alexandria National Museum is quirkier in its scope. Housed in an Italian-style mansion, it mixes Pharaonic artefacts with unexpected Greco-Roman, Islamic, and even underwater discoveries, making for a delightfully eclectic visit.

    A different kind of discovery

These museums prove that history and culture don’t have to be serious or conventional. Africa’s interesting and unique museums offer travellers the chance to experience the continent in ways that are playful, surprising, and unforgettable.
