KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi is set to continue testifying at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry when hearings resume in Pretoria on Thursday.
During Wednesday’s session, Mkhwanazi highlighted the role of the KwaZulu-Natal political killings task team in Gauteng, which led to the arrests of Katiso Molefe and Vusimusi ‘Cat’ Matlala.

Molefe has been implicated in the murder of popular musician DJ Sumbody, whose real name was Oupa Sefoka. Meanwhile, Matlala faces charges of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and money laundering.
Mkhwanazi: “The Decision Got Us Results”
Speaking about the significance of the team’s involvement, Mkhwanazi stressed its impact in tackling organized crime.
“So both of these individuals have been charged with serious offences for which harsh sentences will probably be imposed if imposed. So it is my considered view that the secondment of these ten members from the political killings task team was correct.

“The decision that we made to release them has got us results in terms of assisting in dealing with organized crime,” explained Mkhwanazi.
Firearms Linked to 18 Serious Crimes
According to South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Athlenda Mathe, firearms allegedly linked to Molefe and Matlala connect to 18 serious murder and attempted murder cases.
Matlala is currently facing three attempted murder charges relating to attacks on socialite Tebogo Thobejane, taxi boss Joe Sibanyoni, and DJ Vettys.

“In terms of the case of Sibayoni, we have linked the attempted murder to that one AK 47 that can also be linked to the Aman Swart case, the DJ Sumbody and his two bodyguards’ case, the Don Tindleni, as well as the DJ Vintos murder,” said Mathe.
