Umkhonto Wesizwe Party (MK Party) councillor Doshie “Gaddafi” Govender has made explosive claims that suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu allegedly tried to have him arrested to stop him from contesting a hotly contested by-election in KwaDukuza earlier this year.
“Yes, Senzo Mchunu tried to arrest me before KwaDukuza by-elections, but I outsmarted him,” Govender reportedly told Sunday World.

The revelation follows testimony from KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lt General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who told the Madlanga commission that Mchunu allegedly used the police to fight political battles in KwaDukuza.
Allegations of Police Pressure and Political Interference
Govender alleged that Mchunu summoned North Coast station commander Major General Antony Gopal to discuss a case that he and ANC members believed involved him. However, the case was linked to Govender’s brother, not him.

At the time, Govender had left the ANC, accusing the party of discrimination, and joined the MK Party, which fielded him as its candidate for the Shakaskraal ward by-election in April.
According to Mkhwanazi, Mchunu and his allies feared Govender’s growing popularity and plotted to remove him from the ballot. The alleged attempt collapsed when no grounds for his arrest were found.
“The general (Gopal) stated to me that he was asked to reinvestigate me. But unfortunately when he went through my record, it showed that there was no reason to rearrest me,” Govender explained.

Govender further alleged that when the plan failed, other senior ANC figures in KwaZulu-Natal joined the effort to weaken him politically.

“On the same token, both the MEC of Education (ANC’s Sipho Hlomuka) and the police minister on the 15th of March visited the Principal of Shakaskraal primary school to investigate MKP educators who were wearing MKP T-shirts,” he said.
Govender claimed that both leaders insisted the school principal, Mr Singh, be suspended for allegedly supporting the MK Party. Singh has reportedly been suspended since April 2025.

When contacted for comment, Mchunu said he would respond to the allegations at the commission:
“Would really have loved to respond to you. I am obliged to respond to these allegations at the Commission in detail. [I] would want to wait until then. And I humbly apologise to you for this and hope you will understand,” Mchunu is said to have stated.
