Former president Thabo Mbeki has called on KwaZulu-Natal leaders to urgently address the dismal state of Durban’s port, after the World Bank ranked it as the worst-performing container hub in the world.

The 2024 World Bank Container Port Performance Index, released last week, placed Durban at the bottom of 405 global ports. This marked a sharp fall from its already low 399th position in 2023. Cape Town also fared poorly, ranking 400th.

ANC Leadership Needs to Step Up, Says Thabo Mbeki

Speaking at the ANC’s political school in Durban over the weekend, Mbeki stressed the urgent need for the party to rebuild its internal structures and strengthen leadership.

“That draws attention to the critical importance of the quality of the leadership in this room. The leadership in this room needs to change that report so that the World Bank says that Durban is one of the best-performing seaports in the world, but that depends on our leadership,” Mbeki said.

Mbeki reminded delegates that the issue was not just a provincial one but a national challenge that directly impacts South Africa’s economic future.

“What you do is important for the province, but it’s also important for the future of the country. So, it becomes a common challenge,” he added.
