Calling all Twilight fans! It’s hoa hoa hoa season!

There is something irresistible about the world of Twilight. The mist, the evergreens and that quiet, brooding romance set against endless rain. The dream of every girl who grew up in the Tumblr generation. While South Africa is often known for sunshine and savannahs, there are places here that carry the same cinematic vibe as the misty forests of Forks, Washington.

If you’ve ever imagined yourself talking a broody walk around Forks, here are some destinations in your backyard to bring your closer to your dreams.

    Hogsback, Eastern Cape

Perched high in the Amatola Mountains, Hogsback is South Africa’s answer to Forks. Mist hangs low between ancient trees while moss carpets the forest floor and waterfalls tumble through the green. It is easy to believe that J.R.R. Tolkien drew inspiration from this area. Wander along the Madonna and Child Waterfall trail, stay in a cosy log cabin and listen as rain patters through the canopy. The scene feels pure cinematic magic.

    Tsitsikamma National Park, Garden Route

Tsitsikamma feels like a world apart. Here, forest meets ocean in a dramatic clash of wild beauty. Mist drifts through the towering yellowwoods, waves crash below and the scent of salt and pine lingers in the air. Walk the Storms River suspension bridge or explore the famous Otter Trail, where the combination of coastal cliffs and deep forest evokes that same haunting Twilight energy.

    Knysna Forest, Western Cape

Knysna’s indigenous forest is steeped in history and mystery. Shafts of light pierce through the trees, illuminating moss-covered paths and ancient roots. This is where the last forest elephants once roamed and where solitude still reigns. Take a slow drive to Jubilee Creek or follow the Dalene Matthee memorial trail inspired by her novel Circles in a Forest. It is the kind of place where time feels suspended.

    Magoebaskloof, Limpopo

Known as the Land of the Silver Mist, Magoebaskloof seems made for a scene of quiet tension and lingering glances. Rolling hills give way to forested valleys wrapped in fog. Visit Debengeni Falls, drive through the Magoebaskloof Pass and explore the Woodbush Forest Reserve. On a rainy day the air fills with the scent of earth and pine, and everything feels a little more mysterious.

Underberg and the Southern Drakensberg, KwaZulu-Natal

The Southern Drakensberg has an untamed beauty that feels both romantic and raw. Grey skies sweep over jagged peaks while mist clings to the valleys below. Base yourself in Underberg or Himeville and explore Sani Pass or the surrounding foothills. When the clouds roll in, it is easy to imagine this landscape as the backdrop to an otherworldly love story.

Graskop and the Panorama Route, Mpumalanga

High on the escarpment, Graskop and the Panorama Route are often shrouded in fog, giving the cliffs and waterfalls a haunting allure. God’s Window, Lisbon Falls and the Graskop Gorge are perfect for moody photography and quiet contemplation. When the mist clears, the views stretch endlessly and remind visitors how small and fleeting we are in the face of nature’s drama.

    Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve, Western Cape

This lesser-known gem near Heidelberg offers a rare pocket of indigenous forest that feels ancient and untouched. Tall stinkwood and yellowwood trees rise into the mist and the air hums with birdsong. It is quiet, green and timeless, a setting that feels as though it is holding its breath. Grootvadersbosch is ideal for travellers seeking solitude and a connection with something wild and eternal.

    Nature’s Valley, Garden Route

Tucked between forested hills and the sea, Nature’s Valley carries a sense of secrecy. Its quiet lagoon, misty mornings and shaded trails evoke that Twilight tone of isolation and beauty. The forest feels alive, breathing and whispering with every shift of light. A sunrise walk after a night of rain feels almost supernatural.

    Dullstroom, Mpumalanga Highlands

    Antoinette Plessis/Unsplash

Dullstroom’s misty weather, reflective lakes and log cabins give it a gentle melancholy. Early mornings are hushed, the water still and the hills veiled in cloud. It is a place for fireside reflection and slow-paced wonder. Fly-fishing, forest walks and cosy cafés make it a perfect retreat for travellers seeking cinematic stillness.

    The Amatola Mountains, Eastern Cape

    Lysippos/Wikimedia Commons

Just beyond Hogsback, the Amatolas stretch in blue-grey layers often hidden by fog. The mountain trails weave through dense forest and open onto sweeping views that feel almost mythical. If Twilight were filmed in South Africa, this is where the forest scenes would unfold, quiet and achingly beautiful.

South Africa’s moody, mist-covered corners are proof that you don’t have to travel to Forks to step into the world of Twilight. You only need to follow the fog.
