Southern Africa is home to some of the clearest natural water in the world.
The entire region is packed with lakes, lagoons and tidal pools that are perfect for swimming in calm pools, snorkelling above reefs or capturing photographs that look almost unreal. Here are six clearwater destinations that deserve a place on your next holiday itinerary.

The South-Eastern country of Mozambique is famous for its bright blue coastline and its warm inviting ocean. The waters around Mozambique Island show sandbanks and coral heads with almost perfect visibility. You can swim straight from the beach or take a short boat ride to reach the shallow reefs. Snorkelers often spot parrotfish and butterflyfish close enough to photograph without special equipment. The calm conditions suit travellers who want to explore at a relaxed pace. Visit early in the morning for the best light and the fewest boats on the water.

The Bazaruto Archipelago draws visitors because of its clear tidal lagoons and long quiet beaches. The water is shallow and still which turns it into something like a natural mirror on sunny days. Snorkelling near the reefs, you’ll get to see tropical fish moving through the seagrass and coral. The clarity also makes boat outings ideal for underwater photography since colours appear bright without the need for strong filters. Many visitors choose guided snorkel trips to reach the quieter lagoon points where marine life gathers in larger numbers.
Sodwana Bay reefs

Sodwana Bay in northern KwaZulu Natal is known for some of the best coral reefs in the region. The water here often maintains strong visibility during the summer season. Snorkelers and divers find vibrant reef walls that support turtles rays and small reef sharks. Shore access is easy and the natural protection of the bay creates comfortable swim zones for first time visitors. Clarity improves on days when the wind is gentle so early starts usually deliver the brightest views.
Tsitsikamma rock pools

The Tsitsikamma coastline on the Garden Route is famous for dramatic cliffs but it also contains natural rock pools with remarkably clear water. These pools collect incoming waves and hold them long enough for sediment to settle which allow you to see colourful seaweed patterns and small reef fish. Swimmers enjoy the protected environment especially during low tide when the pools calm down. Photographers can appreciate the way sunlight filters through the water and lights up the rocks below, making for perfect images.
Kosi Bay channels

Kosi Bay lies near the border of Mozambique and offers quiet channels, again, with exceptional clarity. These channels form part of a unique lake system where seawater mixes gently with freshwater. The result is a calm environment with little wave action so visibility remains high throughout the year. Snorkelers can follow channels lined with mangroves and spot small fish moving between roots and sandy patches. Local community run tours often take guests to the clearest points which are perfect for relaxed swimming sessions.
Lake Malawi shallows

Lake Malawi is widely known for its crystal clear freshwater. The shallows remain transparent due to minimal sediment and very light currents. The lake supports colourful cichlid fish that gather near the rocky outcrops. Snorkelling feels almost like exploring an aquarium thanks to the soft light and bright colours. It’s best to choose beach lodges with direct access to quiet swim zones. Kayaking on the lake also offers great clarity which creates excellent opportunities for action photographs.
