What began as a carefree post-matric holiday on Mozambique’s northern coastline has turned into a determined and emotional search for 18-year-old Rikus Kylander.
The teenager from Krugersdorp in Gauteng disappeared while snorkelling near Ponta do Ouro, a popular beach destination known for its warm waters, reef life and powerful ocean conditions.
Rikus was visiting the area with a group of school friends when he went into the water and did not return. Despite immediate efforts by companions and local authorities, no confirmed sightings have been reported since his disappearance in mid-December.
Search operations have continued across both land and sea. Local rescue teams, private pilots and volunteer divers have conducted aerial sweeps, shoreline patrols and offshore searches extending towards Kosi Bay and Sodwana Bay. Weather conditions and strong currents have complicated efforts, yet teams remain committed to covering as much coastline as possible.
The Kylander family has stayed in Mozambique throughout the search, coordinating with rescue groups and appealing for ongoing assistance. Community support has been significant, with a BackaBuddy fundraising campaign helping to fund fuel, aircraft hours and additional search logistics. Messages of encouragement and solidarity continue to circulate across social platforms, keeping public attention focused on the case.
Ponta do Ouro is widely regarded as a prime snorkelling and diving location, drawing travellers for its coral reefs and marine biodiversity. However, the same open-ocean exposure that attracts adventurers can also create unpredictable swimming conditions, including rip currents and sudden swell changes. Local operators regularly advise visitors to remain cautious and to monitor weather and tide conditions closely.
For now, the Kylander family remains hopeful. With continued community backing and the persistence of search teams, efforts continue along the coastline in the belief that any new lead could bring answers.
