An American traveller has died after falling into the 108-metre-deep gorge below Victoria Falls, one of Africa’s most spectacular natural landmarks.

Authorities from both Zambia and Zimbabwe confirmed the body was found after an intensive multi-day search and rescue operation. According to the South African, the incident occurred after the visitor crossed from Victoria Falls town in Zimbabwe to the Zambian side via the Victoria Falls Bridge. He failed to return to his lodge later that day, prompting concern among hosts. A local lodge raised the alarm when he did not check back in, triggering a cross-border alert between law enforcement agencies in both countries.

Search teams shifted from a rescue to a recovery mission once the body was spotted wedged between rocks deep in the gorge. Police divers, secured with ropes, carefully descended the treacherous terrain and placed the remains on a stretcher. After several hours of strenuous work, the team hauled the body to the surface before transferring it for formal identification.

Zambian officials later positively confirmed the identity of the deceased American tourist. Investigations into the exact circumstances of the fall are ongoing, and authorities have said they will release additional information as inquiries progress.

Victoria Falls remains a major global travel destination, drawing thousands of visitors each year for its dramatic scenery and adventure activities. However, the combination of wet, spray-slicked rock and sheer cliffs presents inherent risks. Visitors are urged to adhere to posted safety guidelines, remain within designated viewing areas and travel with accredited guides where appropriate.
