New Delhi’s engagement with Africa is driven by a combination of economic, energy, security and diplomatic priorities, making the continent an increasingly important pillar of India’s foreign policy.

Trade and investment remain at the center of the relationship. Africa’s rapidly growing economies offer significant opportunities for Indian companies across sectors such as information technology, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, manufacturing, infrastructure and financial services. Expanding commercial ties have helped strengthen economic interdependence between India and African nations while opening new markets for Indian businesses, News.az reports.

Energy and resource security also play a crucial role in shaping India’s Africa policy. A number of African countries possess substantial reserves of oil, natural gas and critical minerals that are essential for industrial development and emerging technologies. As one of the world’s fastest growing major economies, India views diversified access to these resources as vital for supporting long term economic growth and reducing dependence on a limited number of suppliers.

Maritime security represents another key area of cooperation. The Indian Ocean serves as a strategic link between India and the eastern coast of Africa, carrying a large share of global trade and energy shipments. Collaboration with African coastal states helps strengthen efforts to combat piracy, protect vital sea lanes, secure commercial shipping routes and enhance regional stability across the broader Indian Ocean region.

Diplomatic considerations further reinforce India’s engagement with the continent. African countries collectively constitute one of the largest voting groups within international organizations, including the United Nations. Building strong partnerships with African governments supports India’s efforts to advance its positions on global governance issues and strengthen its voice in multilateral institutions.

Taken together, these economic, strategic and diplomatic interests explain why relations with Africa occupy a prominent place in India’s foreign policy agenda and why platforms such as the India-Africa Forum Summit are viewed as important mechanisms for deepening cooperation across a wide range of sectors.
