Can AI help you vote? Why US voters are asking chatbots for election advice
As election ballots become longer and more complicated, some voters are asking AI chatbots for political guidance. While the technology can simplify research, experts warn it should not replace independent fact-checking
Voters are using ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini to compare candidates, understand ballot measures and make strategic voting decisions, even as experts warn against relying solely on AI for political information.
- Voters increasingly use AI for election research.
- AI helps understand candidates & strategic voting.
- Experts warn of AI risks; use as research tool.
Did our AI summary help?
With election ballots often running into dozens of races, many voters find it difficult to research every candidate before heading to the polls. Increasingly, some are turning to artificial intelligence for help
According to The New York Times, the 2026 US midterm elections may be the first in which significant numbers of Americans are using AI chatbots such as ChatGPT, Claude and Google’s Gemini to help them understand candidates, compare positions and even think through strategic voting decisions. While AI companies have built safeguards to prevent their chatbots from explicitly telling people who to vote for, users are finding ways to ask more nuanced questions that still influence their choices

How are voters using AI?
One example cited by The New York Times is Mia Taylor, a voter in Los Angeles County who photographed her ballot and asked Anthropic’s Claude, “Who do I vote for here?” The chatbot initially declined to recommend candidates directly. However, after she asked it to analyse recommendations from well-known progressive organisations and suggest the most strategic voting option, Claude provided detailed information about each race and explained why voting for one mayoral candidate could reduce another candidate’s chances of advancing.
Rather than issuing a direct endorsement, the chatbot helped her weigh different political strategies before she cast her ballot

Why are chatbots becoming popular during elections?
The attraction is easy to understand. Modern election ballots often include local offices, judicial contests and ballot measures that receive relatively little media attention. Researching every candidate individually can take hours
AI chatbots offer a faster alternative by summarising information, comparing candidates’ positions and directing users to voter guides and publicion, these tools can provide a useful starting point

What are the risks?
Despite their growing popularity, experts caution against relying entirely on AI for political decisions
Large language models can make factual mistakes, use outdated information or confidently present inaccurate conclusions. Their answers may also vary depending on how a question is framed, meaning two users asking about the same race could receive different responses
That is why election experts recommend using AI as a research tool rather than as a substitute for official election websites, trusted news organisations or independent voter guides
Could AI change how people vote?
Increasing reliance on AI technology has coincided with a greater change in people’s search habits. In much the same way that search engines changed the way that voters looked up candidates in the previous two decades, conversational AI technology is now beginning to do the same by providing personal summaries and responding to complex questions instantly
Only time will tell whether AI will ultimately help voters make more informed choices or simply create new dangers of misinformation and bias. However, what is becoming clearer and clearer with each passing day is that AI is moving beyond writing emails and planning vacations to actually affecting one of the most important decisions made by citizens
