What if a “wall” could stop a desert from spreading? Across Africa’s Sahel region, an ambitious conservation project is doing just that. The Great Green Wall, stretching from Senegal to Djibouti, is restoring degraded land, reviving biodiversity and helping communities adapt to climate change.

It is not just trees in a single line anymore, this wall is sending back life to one of the world’s most fragile places, on a continental scale.

What is this Green Wall doing in Africa?

The Great Green Wall project was initiated by the African Union in the year 2007 to help fight desertification in the southern boundary of the Sahara. It involves tree planting, improved agriculture and water use to restore forests, farmland and wetlands. It also contributes to enhancing soil health, food security and local livelihoods.

Nature doesn’t waste, nor should we.

🍂 Fallen leaves become soil 🦌 Animal droppings nourish plants 🪵 Dead trees become shelter 🪱 Worms turn scraps into compost In nature, nothing goes to waste. How Long is this Wall?

Extending across the Sahel for almost 8,000 kilometres, the Great Green Wall traverses 11 countries from Senegal on Africa’s west coast to Djibouti in the east. The idea for a “tree belt” has become a network of local initiatives for tree restoration that are responsive to various ecosystems.

    Conservation Solution, as per scientists!

Ecosystems on degraded landscapes are thought to be more resilient to increasing temperatures, help preserve biodiversity, and to slow desertification of the landscape. Restoring Health is also a climate change solution that enhances water balance, helps to mitigate soil erosion and stores carbon, all of which is contributed by healthy vegetation.

5 Counties Restored Millions of Hectares in Africa

The project brings back about 30 million hectares of degraded land already and in the process. About 12 million trees adapted to arid conditions have been planted in Senegal, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Niger and Burkina Faso.Millions of hectares have been reforested and sustainably managed. The results of this work are contributing to the restoration of ecosystems and the livelihoods of local communities.

A Climate Solution with Global Impact

The Great Green Wall is expected to have reclaimed 100 million hectares of land by 2030 and sequestered 250 million tonnes of carbon dioxide. This wall will produce 10 million green jobs. Despite funding issues, climate limitations and many projects that will need to build momentum, the effort is one of the world’s largest ecosystem restoration projects.
