Nigeria-Malawi: A clash of extremes to kickoff Group C
Ten-time record champions Nigeria start their title defense against debutants Malawi in a blockbuster Group C opener at the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2026 in Rabat, Morocco.
Between Nigeria’s continued ambition to dominate the African landscape and the Scorchers’ unapologetic desire for an upset, this tie promises a captivating duel of styles at the centrally located Al Madina Stadium.
This one is a clash of contrasts. On one side has the continent’s outright powerhouse – Nigeria, the 10-time defending champions. On the other end, Malawi – the tournament’s underdog, preparing to play their first-ever match in the final stages of the continental showpiece.
On paper, the confrontation has all the hallmarks of a David versus Goliath clash. But on the eve of taking to the pitch, both teams displayed undiminished ambition, fueled by speeches resolutely focused on the game.
Malawi ready to upset the status quo
For the Scorchers, the initial excitement of their first time in the tournament quickly gave way to a competitive spirit. There was no question of arriving in Morocco as sacrificial lambs. In the pre-match press conference, coach Lovemore Fazili set the tone from the outset: “Getting this far means that we are ready for this match. People may underestimate us but we are a good team, capable of causing an upset. We are not resigned victims.”
To challenge the Nigerian powerhouse, Malawi will rely on their superstar duo – the world renowned Chawinga sisters; Temwa and Tabitha. A true spearhead for her team and seasoned in major European tournaments, captain Tabitha Chawinga approaches this historic encounter with boundless enthusiasm.
“It was my dream to play in the WAFCON. The time has come. We know Nigeria’s worth. They are a great nation but we must focus on ourselves. Our players need to compete without any inferiority complex,” Chawinga adds.
The Super Falcons on a “retention mission”
For the Super Falcons, there is obviously no room for doubt, but caution remains essential. Confident in their status and buoyed by the memory of their victory on Moroccan soil in the previous edition, Nigeria know they will be the team to beat.
For coach Justine Madugu, there is no question of taking this first hurdle lightly: “We are here to defend our title and secure our qualification for the World Cup. The team is fully prepared and ready for battle. We have deep respect for Malawi. They are a very good team, and we are taking absolutely nothing for granted.”
A message of discipline shared by the team’s captain and leading figure, Rasheedat Ajibade. Named Best Player of the last WAFCON, the striker reiterated the sole guiding principle of the Nigerian locker room – a winning mentality.
“For us, a good performance means taking all three points. That is what really matters in a tournament like this. If you play well but don’t win, it is pointless. We approach every opponent with humility, but our objective is clear.”
Nigeria have never lost to a debutant team at the WAFCON since the first edition in 1998.
