Born on July 15, 1939, in Osogbo, Osun State, Osoba displayed exceptional brilliance and determination from an early age. He began his journalism career with the Daily Times of Nigeria in 1964, quickly distinguishing himself through fearless investigative reporting and professional excellence. By 1975, he had become Editor of the newspaper, and in 1984, he rose to the position of Managing Director.
Among the defining moments of his journalism career was his discovery of the burial site of Nigeria’s first Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, following the January 1966 military coup. It was a landmark achievement that demonstrated the immense value of investigative journalism in uncovering the truth during one of Nigeria’s most turbulent periods.
His professional excellence received international recognition in 1974 when he became the first Nigerian journalist to receive the prestigious Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University. It was a fitting honour for a journalist whose career consistently reflected Aristotle’s enduring assertion that “The high-minded man must care more for truth than for what people think.” For Chief Osoba, journalism was never about popularity or personal acclaim; it was about truth, accountability and service to society.

Elected twice as Executive Governor of Ogun State—first in 1992 during the Third Republic and again in 1999 at the dawn of the Fourth Republic—he brought to governance the same discipline, transparency and principled leadership that had earned him distinction in journalism.

As a practising journalist with the Ondo State Radiovision Corporation in Akure, I witnessed his first swearing-in as Executive Governor of Ogun State. Years later, while serving as Chief Press Secretary to the Executive Governor of Ondo State, I had further opportunities to observe him during regular meetings of Alliance for Democracy (AD) governors at the Ijebu-Igbo residence of the late Afenifere leader, Chief Abraham Adesanya. Those experiences offered valuable insight into Chief Osoba’s exceptional leadership, discipline, strategic thinking and unwavering commitment to progressive governance.
Beyond journalism and governance, Chief Osoba holds a distinguished place in Nigeria’s democratic history. As a founding member of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), he stood firmly against military dictatorship at a time when doing so required extraordinary courage. He endured persecution, survived multiple assassination attempts, and remained steadfast in the struggle to restore democratic rule.
His courage echoes Nelson Mandela’s timeless words: “Courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it.” Through his sacrifices, Chief Osoba inspired countless Nigerians to believe that democracy was worth defending, regardless of the personal cost.
Today, as an elder statesman, he continues to command respect within Nigeria’s political landscape.
