Twisha Sharma Death Case: Judicial Custody of Husband, Mother-in-Law Extended Amid Voice Sample Dispute
Samarth Singh’s counsel disputes CBI’s claim that he refused a voice sample, even as AIIMS confirms a gymnastics belt as the ligature in Twisha Sharma’s death and a Bhopal court extends judicial custody till July 28.
Twisha Sharma’s Husband Contests CBI’s Voice Sample Claim, Custody Extended Till July 28
The Central Bureau of Investigation has told a special court in Bhopal that Samarth Singh, husband of former model and actorTwisha Sharma, refused to give his voice sample for forensic examination during the probe into her death. Singh’s lawyer has strongly disputed this claim, telling the court that his client never refused to cooperate and had only sought clarifications about the transcript he was asked to read out for the exercise.
According to Samarth’s counsel, the agency wrongly informed the court that he had declined to provide the sample, when in fact he had merely raised questions about the text handed to him. The lawyer alleged that instead of resolving those concerns, the CBI misrepresented his position before the court.
Giribala Singh’s advocate, Enosh George, also rejected the CBI’s claim of non-cooperation, telling the court that she had already given her voice sample on three separate occasions.“We have not refused to give a voice sample. Giribala Singh has given her voice sample three times,”George told the court.
The dispute over the voice samples comes even as a court-ordered second autopsy, along with a final forensic report from AIIMS Delhi received earlier this week, has confirmedthat a gymnastics belt fitted with a metal ring was the ligature used in the hanging. The report found that the belt matched the injury marks on Twisha’s neck and carried traces of her skin tissue, corroborating the findings of the second autopsy.
Dr Sudhir Gupta, Head of Forensic Medicine at AIIMS Delhi, said the medical board had examined the case from every angle over nearly a month, drawing on national and international literature before arriving at its conclusion. “It is a crystal-clear opinion for the CBI and for the judiciary in the interest of truth and justice,” Gupta was quoted as saying.
Twisha Sharma, a 33-year-old former model and former Miss Pune, was found hanging at her matrimonial home in Bhopal in May. Her family alleged that she had been subjected to severe dowry-related harassment, mental abuse and domestic violence, following which the CBI took over the investigation and arrested her husband, advocate Samarth Singh, along with her mother-in-law, retired district judge Giribala Singh.
As per the FIR, Samarth Singh had taken Twisha to AIIMS Bhopal on the night of May 12, claiming she had hanged herself at home around 10:20 pm. Doctors at the hospital later told police she had been brought in dead, following which a medico-legal case was registered.
Twisha’s family has maintained she was harassed over dowry and subjected to domestic violence by her husband and in-laws. They told investigators that she had spoken to her mother on a call at 9:41 pm on the day of her death, during which Samarth could allegedly be heard shouting before the line disconnected abruptly. The FIR further states that when the family’s subsequent attempts to reach Twisha failed, Giribala Singh eventually answered the phone and told a family member that she was “no more” before ending the call.
The CBI is currently studying the AIIMS forensic report to decide its next course of action in the investigation. Meanwhile, a local court in Bhopal on Tuesday extended the judicial custody of both Samarth Singh and Giribala Singh till July 28, after the agency alleged that the two accused were not cooperating in providing their voice samples during the ongoing probe.
The case, which has drawn wide public attention over the death of a young actor inside her marital home, continues to be investigated by the CBI, with both the forensic findings and the voice sample dispute expected to weigh on the next stage of proceedings before the special court.
