Indonesia’s Trade Ministry said Central Asian and African economies offer significant potential and should become a greater focus of the country’s export strategy. Officials also highlighted the potential of tropical agricultural products, including snake fruit, as Indonesia seeks to increase shipments of higher-value goods.
The government is encouraging producers to move beyond the export of raw commodities by investing in processing, packaging and other forms of downstream production. Officials argue that transforming agricultural raw materials into finished and premium products could generate greater export value while strengthening Indonesia’s position in international supply chains.
Bali is expected to play a role in this strategy because of its production of tropical fruits as well as coffee and cocoa. Greater processing and product development could allow these commodities to reach overseas consumers as higher-value exports rather than primarily as raw materials.
The push into new markets comes as Indonesia records continued growth in international trade. The country’s exports reached US$282.91 billion in 2025, up from US$266.52 billion in 2024, while average annual export growth between 2021 and 2025 stood at 3.12%.
Indonesia also recorded a US$3.58 billion trade surplus during January–June 2026. The country’s annual trade surplus increased from approximately US$31 billion in 2024 to US$41 billion in 2025, highlighting the strengthening contribution of external trade to the national economy.
Exports have reached approximately US$280 billion so far in 2026, putting Indonesia within reach of its full-year target of US$315 billion.
Officials stressed that successful market expansion will require closer coordination between national and regional authorities, exporters and other stakeholders, particularly in developing logistics, product standards and market-specific strategies.
