PARIS, France — August 12, 2026:  Sylyac Marie Mvogo, the Prefect of Wouri — Cameroon’s most economically significant administrative district, encompassing the commercial capital Douala- was reportedly detained Tuesday morning by French customs officials at Roissy-Charles de Gaulle International Airport, allegedly found in possession of approximately €130,000 in undeclared cash hidden in his personal luggage, multiple Cameroonian media outlets reported.

According to reports first circulated by Cameroonian journalist Paul Chouta, French customs authorities intercepted the senior government official at the Paris airport, placing him under questioning for alleged currency trafficking and violations of French financial legislation. The sum — equivalent to roughly 85 million CFA francs — far exceeds the legal threshold for undeclared cash crossing European Union borders, which stands at €10,000.

However, no French customs authority, no official Cameroonian government spokesperson, and no international wire service has independently confirmed the arrest as of the time of this report. The story remains unverified by official sources.

If confirmed, the detention would mark a significant development in the twilight of President Paul Biya’s 43-year rule. Mvogo was appointed Prefect of Wouri by presidential decree in January 2024, making him one of Biya’s own appointees — placed in charge of the administrative nerve center of Cameroon’s economic heartland.

The alleged incident is not Mvogo’s first brush with legal controversy. Since December 2025, a judicial order from the Court of Appeal of the Littoral designated external tribunals to investigate a complaint filed against Mvogo for alleged abuse of trust, favoritism, and attempted fraud — charges linked to an illegal land transaction in the Wouri jurisdiction.

Mvogo had also been embroiled in a public dispute with the Governor of the Littoral Region, Samuel Dieudonné Ivaha Diboua, over sensitive land files in the Japoma-Bakoko zone — a conflict that had already made him one of Cameroon’s most controversial serving prefects.

The alleged airport seizure comes as Cameroon enters an increasingly uncertain political period, with President Biya, 93, hospitalised in Geneva for more than 66 days and absent from public view. Analysts have warned that Biya’s inner circle may be moving assets out of Cameroon in anticipation of political transition and potential accountability.

French authorities have not issued any statement. The Cameroonian government has not responded to requests for comment.

ABS will continue to monitor and update this story as official confirmation becomes available.
