Local author, Dr. David Washington
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. —Readers and aspiring writers will have a chance to meet authors, discover new books and explore African American history and culture during an African American Local Author Book Fair at the Malloy/Jordan East Winston Heritage Center Branch Library.
The family-friendly event is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 19, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Malloy Jordan East Winston Heritage Center. Organizers describe the fair as a celebration of storytelling, culture and community, with opportunities to hear discussions, interact with local and regional authors and support diverse voices in literature.
Local author Dr. David Washington is among the participating authors and is expected to share his creative journey “from an idea on the page to a finished graphic novel” during the event.
Washington is a North Carolina-based writer and the creator of “Black Defender: The Awakening,” a graphic novel that introduces a Black superhero while exploring themes of courage, justice, leadership and representation. Washington also is an educator, attorney and U.S. Army veteran.
During the fair, Washington plans to speak with community members about the process of developing a graphic novel, including creating characters, building a story and bringing ideas to life visually.
“Black Defender: The Awakening” has received national recognition, including an NAACP Image Award nomination, and was named BookLife’s Graphic Novel of the Year. Washington is also developing “Black Defender” into an animated film.
Washington’s message to those attending the event is: “Be Courageous.”
