A call for Responsibility in Ghana’s Political Discourse

Ghana is a proud democracy with a long tradition of political debate, freedom of expression and peaceful competition. Our political differences are not a weakness; they are part of the democratic strength of our Republic.

However, I am increasingly concerned about the tone of political discourse, particularly across social media and the growing community of political bloggers and commentators.

Political disagreement is healthy. Personal insults, character assassination, deliberate misinformation, abuse and the destruction of reputations are not.

We must remember that behind every political name is a Ghanaian citizen, a family and a human being deserving of dignity and respect.

Our political space must not become a battlefield where truth is sacrificed for clicks, followers, political advantage or temporary popularity.

The consequences go beyond the individuals being attacked. What we write, publish and circulate is increasingly how the world sees Ghana. Investors, development partners, international institutions, diplomats, tourists and the global Ghanaian community are all watching our digital space.

When our public conversation is dominated by insults, threats, misinformation and mistrust, we do not only damage one another; we diminish the image and reputation of Ghana.

UNESCO has noted that harmful online content can deepen societal divisions, undermine trust in public institutions and weaken democratic processes. Ghana is not immune to these challenges.

I therefore appeal to political bloggers, influencers, journalists, activists, political parties and, indeed, all citizens:

Let us disagree without destroying one another.

Let us criticise policies without abusing personalities.

Let us challenge leaders without dehumanising them.

Let us verify before we publish.
Let us debate ideas, not destroy people.
And above all, let us remember Ghana.
The Ghana we want to leave to our children cannot be built on permanent suspicion, insults and political hatred. It must be built on truth, tolerance, mutual respect, responsible citizenship and confidence in our democratic institutions.

We can be passionate without being abusive.
We can be partisan without being hateful.
We can be fierce in debate without becoming enemies.

Ghana needs a new culture of political conversation—one in which freedom of expression is matched by responsibility, and political competition is matched by respect for the dignity of the Ghanaian.

I call on all of us, especially Social Media Bloggers, to lower the temperature, raise the standard of our national conversation and put the interests and image of Ghana above the temporary excitement of political confrontation.

Our politics will change. Our leaders will change. Governments will change. But Ghana must endure.

Let us therefore disagree with dignity, compete with integrity and speak of our country in a manner that makes every Ghanaian proud.

    Ghana first. Ghana always.
