Tunisia, Egypt and South Africa rank among Africa’s innovation leaders

The countries have achieved strong results in the fields of science, technology, education and innovation infrastructure

Tunisia, Egypt and South Africa are among the African countries with the highest scores in the 2026 Global Innovation Index. This is stated in the 19th edition of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) ranking, reports Tunis Afrique Presse (TAP), a partner of TV BRICS.

Experts cited human capital and scientific research as one of Tunisia’s strengths.

Tunisia ranks first in the world for the number of graduates in science and engineering disciplines and 12th for the volume of scientific publications.

The country also performs well in attracting foreign investment in research and development of cutting-edge technologies.

The WIPO Global Innovation Index has been compiled since 2007. It takes into account around 80 indicators, including expenditure on research and development, trade in high-tech goods, employment of skilled professionals and the licensing of intellectual property.

“We see growth year after year. Last year, the figure increased by 11.6 per cent. The total share of our products on the sales market is around 24.7 per cent. BRICS countries account for a quarter of all our products. Good-neighbourly relations with Kazakhstan are very important for us. Then come China and India. We primarily focus on these countries because they are our closest neighbours“
