Tanzania is not the place for a “budget trip” where you somehow spend ₹2,000 a day and come home with stories about the Serengeti. Safari costs are real, park fees are unavoidable, and the vehicle is a major part of the bill. But there is a way to bring the numbers down: join a shared safari, camp instead of staying in lodges and stick to Tanzania’s Northern Circuit. So, here’s how to squeeze a proper Tanzania safari into five days without pretending it costs peanuts.

5-Day Tanzania Safari Itinerary On A Budget: Serengeti, Ngorongoro & Arusha

Day 1: Arrive In Arusha, Your Safari Launchpad

Fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport, which is around 50 km from Arusha, and use the first day to recover from the flight rather than immediately chasing lions.

Arusha is where most Northern Circuit safaris begin. Get a budget hotel or hostel, wander around the city, eat some local food and, most importantly, meet your safari operator. This is also the day to buy anything you forgot at home: sunscreen, a hat, snacks and a pair of binoculars if you don’t already have them.

    Stay: Budget hostel/hotel.
Tip: Confirm that your safari quote includes park fees, meals, camping, vehicle and guide. A suspiciously cheap quote often becomes less cheap once the extras arrive.

    Day 2: Arusha to Serengeti

    Now comes the long drive.

A shared 4×4 takes you towards the Serengeti National Park, passing through some seriously dramatic landscapes along the way. You aren’t paying for a luxury seat with a minibar, so expect a road-heavy day. That’s the trade-off.

Once inside the Serengeti, head out for an afternoon game drive. This is the part where “I saw a lion” stops being something you say while scrolling Instagram and becomes something you can actually prove. Keep your camera ready for zebras, giraffes, elephants, antelope and big cats.

Budget camping is exactly what it sounds like: a tent, basic campsite facilities and meals prepared by the safari crew. A current 2026 operator quote puts a three-day shared camping safari at US$690 (₹66,163) per person, including park fees, vehicle, guide, tent and meals.

Safari cost benchmark: US$690 (₹66,163) for three days

    Day 3: Serengeti, All Day

    Wake up early. Very early!

The animals didn’t read your hotel checkout policy, so if you want the best chance of seeing predators, morning game drives are worth sacrificing that extra hour of sleep.

Spend most of the day exploring the Serengeti, stopping for a packed lunch rather than heading back to a lodge. The landscape changes constantly; golden grasslands, acacia trees, herds moving across the plains and the occasional predator watching everything like it owns the place.

And frankly, it kind of does.

The Serengeti’s conservation fee for non-resident adults has historically been US$70 (₹6,712) per 24 hours, with current TANAPA tariffs applying the relevant government rates. TANAPA confirms conservation fees are charged for 24-hour periods and that its published fees include VAT where applicable.

    Overnight: Budget campsite
    Meals: Included in safari package

Day 4: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater to Arusha

This is a packed day, but also one of the most memorable.

Leave Serengeti and head towards the Ngorongoro Crater, descending into the enormous volcanic caldera for a game drive. Expect a very different landscape from the Serengeti, with wildlife concentrated around the crater floor.

After the game drive, have your packed lunch and begin the drive back towards Arusha. Yes, it’s a lot of driving. No, you probably shouldn’t attempt to add Zanzibar to this itinerary.

This five-day version works because the safari operator handles the complicated bits: vehicle, guide, campsites, meals and conservation charges. Current 2026 budget safari prices vary substantially by operator and route, with published three-day group-joining options ranging from US$585 (₹56,100) for 4-6 people to higher-priced departures.

Day 5: Arusha And Fly Home

Don’t schedule anything ambitious in this part of your Tanzania itinerary.

Have breakfast, pick up souvenirs, explore a little of Arusha and head to the airport. If you have a late flight, this is your chance to sit somewhere with a cold drink and process the fact that you spent the previous few days sleeping in a tent while elephants casually wandered around the same country.

What Does A 5-Day Budget Tanzania Itinerary Actually Cost?

For the on-the-ground portion, a realistic starting point looks like this:

    • 3-day shared camping safari: US$585-690 (₹56,100 – ₹66,163), depending on group size and operator.
    • Budget accommodation before/after safari: Allow roughly US$20-40 (₹1,918 – ₹3,836) per night as a planning figure.
    • Tanzania tourist visa: The Tanzania Immigration portal lists the ordinary visa at US$50 (₹4,795) for up to 90 days; the Tanzania High Commission’s New Delhi page separately states US$100 (₹9,589) for Indian citizens applying for a one-year multiple-entry visa. For a normal single trip, check the visa category applicable to your passport before paying.
    • Food outside safari: Keep around US$10-20 (₹959 – ₹1,918) a day for simple meals.

Realistic budget excluding international flights: roughly ₹65,000 – ₹80,000 per person, depending mainly on your safari operator, group size and accommodation in this Tanzania itinerary.

How much does a 5-day Tanzania safari cost?

A realistic starting budget for the on-ground portion, excluding international flights, is around ₹65,000-₹80,000 per person. The final amount depends mainly on your safari operator, group size, accommodation and inclusions.

What is included in a budget Tanzania safari?

Depending on the operator, a shared camping safari can include the safari vehicle, guide, park fees, camping equipment, meals and campsite accommodation. Always confirm inclusions before booking.
