    • Transsion Holdings made a rocky debut on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, raising $394 million as shares fell amid memory chip cost worries.
    • Soaring memory chip prices driven by the AI boom forced price increases, causing Africa shipments to decline and threatening Transsion‘s low-cost model.
    • Transsion raised average prices, invested about 40% of IPO proceeds in AI R&D, and is expanding into energy storage and electric mobility in Africa.

Chinese smartphone giant Transsion Holdings, often dubbed the “King of African Smartphones,” made a rocky debut on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange as rising memory chip costs, driven by the artificial intelligence boom, threaten the low-cost business model that propelled its dominance across Africa.

The Shenzhen-based company, which owns the popular Tecno, Infinix and itel brands, raised $394 million through its secondary listing on Thursday, seven years after going public in Shanghai. However, shares continued to slide after trading began, falling more than 7% at one point.

Transsion built its success by tailoring affordable handsets to consumers in emerging markets, particularly Africa, where its founder, Zhu Zhaojiang, spotted a market gap in 2006.

While international brands largely overlooked local needs, Transsion introduced dual-SIM phones to help users avoid high cross-network charges, longer-lasting batteries to cope with unreliable electricity, and camera technology optimized for darker skin tones.

The strategy paid off. In 2025, Transsion accounted for 53.1% of all mobile phones sold in Africa.

Rising Chip Costs Threaten Transsion’s African Dominance

But the company’s dominance is facing an increasingly difficult test as soaring memory chip prices force manufacturers to raise prices or abandon cheaper models.

According to <a href="https://omdia.tech.informa.com/pr/2026/aug/africa-smartphone-market-expected-to-decline-26percent-in-2026-following-first-contraction-in-three-years” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>market research firm Omdia, African smartphone shipments fell 7% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026, their first decline in three years. Shipments of devices priced below $100 plunged 34%, while Transsion’s own shipments dropped 14%, reducing its smartphone market share from 51% to 47%.

The slowdown has been especially pronounced in Nigeria and Kenya, where smartphone shipments contracted 11% and 15% respectively.

The pressure comes from a global memory chip shortage, as manufacturers increasingly prioritize higher-margin components for AI infrastructure over those used in budget smartphones.

Chinese business and technology outlet Dingjiao One (定焦One) pointed out that Transsion’s long-standing formula of selling inexpensive phones in high volumes using low-cost supply chains is becoming increasingly difficult to sustain.

Ade, a Nigerian phone wholesaler, told Dingjiao One that models previously sold out within two weeks now take more than a month to clear, as higher prices discourage customers.

    Higher Prices Help Restore Profits

Transsion has responded by raising prices and shifting toward more expensive models. Its average smartphone selling price increased from $77 to $100 in the first half of 2026, even as smartphone sales volumes fell from 44.5 million to 39.5 million units.

The strategy has helped restore profitability. The company reported a 46.2% increase in first-half net profit, although it acknowledged that some of the improvement reflected previously purchased inventory that delayed the impact of rising component costs.

Betting on AI and Energy Storage for Growth

Transsion is now betting on the same technology boom that has driven up its manufacturing expenses.

The company plans to devote approximately 40% of its Hong Kong IPO proceeds to AI-related research and development, including localized AI assistants and multilingual applications tailored to emerging markets. Another 20% will go toward mobile internet services and Internet of Things products.

Beyond smartphones, Transsion is also entering energy storage and electric mobility, aiming to leverage its extensive African distribution networks.

Chinese financial commentary outlet Songguo Finance (松果财经) noted that the company’s energy storage business generated around $68 million in revenue in the first four months of 2026, exceeding its entire 2025 revenue. Transsion has launched the itel Energy and DYQUE Energy brands, offering products ranging from lithium batteries to solar equipment.

Transsion’s established distribution networks and local workforce across Africa could give it a head start in the energy storage market, helping it identify consumer needs and find local partners.

However, energy storage systems require specialized installation and ongoing maintenance, while equipment must withstand local power grid conditions and high temperatures. Whether Transsion can translate its smartphone distribution advantages into reliable energy solutions remains a key challenge.
