Non-profit organisation (NGO) Women and Men Against Child Abuse is calling for the swift sentencing of convicted child sex offender Iain Wares.

This follows the postponement of his pre-sentencing trial in the Wynberg Magistrates Court on Wednesday due to illness.

State frustrated by fresh delays in sentencing of convicted paedophile Iain Wares

The 86-year-old was convicted in March of indecently assaulting a Grade 5 learner at Rondebosch Boys’ Primary School, where he taught, in 1998.

The three-year trial against Wares is nearing its end, with pre-sentencing proceedings due to resume next Friday.

His defence team has been ordered to submit a follow-up medical note when the matter returns to court.

Although he remains out on bail, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said a warrant for his arrest is pending.

Miranda Jordan of Women and Men Against Child Abuse has criticised the decision to keep Wares on bail and said the matter must be finalised without further delay.

“We are pleased to see is that Magistrate Miki has only allowed six days, and then we are back in court for pre-sentencing, which we hope to be swiftly followed by sentencing.”

The organisation has also warned against South Africa becoming a safe haven for paedophiles like Wares.
