South Africa‘s new vehicle market has posted its strongest June performance in nearly two decades.

The latest data shows South Africans bought more than 54,000 new vehicles in June, up 15.3% from a year ago, making it the country’s best June sales performance in 19 years.

The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA) said the strong showing reflects resilient consumer demand despite ongoing economic pressures.

NAAMSA said easing inflation, lower interest rates and improving business confidence have continued to support the domestic vehicles market, with government fleet purchases also contributing to higher sales.

Passenger vehicle sales jumped 18.1%, while light commercial vehicle sales, including bakkies and minibuses, rose 8.4%.

However, exports remain under pressure. Vehicle exports fell to 6.9% in June compared to the same month in 2025, as weaker demand in key international markets and global trade uncertainty weighed on manufacturers.

NAAMSA said while domestic momentum is encouraging, sustained growth will depend on stronger export demand and continued improvements in South Africa’s economic environment.
