The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has partnered with the ECOWAS Commission through the Regional Off-Grid Electricity Access Project (ROGEAP) to expand the deployment of clean energy technologies that will support farmers and agribusinesses across Nigeria and the West African region.

The initiative is designed to modernise agricultural production by promoting energy-efficient technologies that reduce dependence on diesel, improve food processing and storage, minimise post-harvest losses and strengthen food security.

Speaking at a national stakeholders’ workshop in Abuja, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, represented by Joseph Tegbe, said the productive use of energy is critical to unlocking growth in agriculture, industrialisation, financial inclusion, climate resilience and rural development.

He noted that inadequate access to reliable energy continues to limit agricultural productivity, with many farmers unable to access cold storage, processing facilities and other productive equipment needed to add value to their produce.

According to him, the partnership seeks to address these challenges by promoting renewable energy solutions that can power agricultural enterprises, reduce operating costs and improve the competitiveness of rural businesses.

The REA said the programme will support the adoption of productive-use technologies across agricultural value chains, enabling farmers, processors and small businesses to improve productivity while creating jobs and expanding economic opportunities.

The workshop brought together government agencies, development partners, private sector operators and other stakeholders to explore strategies for accelerating clean energy adoption in agriculture and strengthening regional food systems.

Nigeria, Morocco Partner to Boost Agricultural Intelligence and Food Security

Nigeria and Morocco have signed a partnership agreement aimed at strengthening agricultural intelligence and enhancing food security through improved cooperation in the agricultural sector.

The agreement is expected to deepen collaboration between both countries in the use of data, technology, research, and innovation to improve agricultural productivity, support farmers, and strengthen food systems.

The partnership will focus on advancing agricultural intelligence by promoting knowledge sharing, capacity building, and the adoption of modern farming practices. It is also designed to help both countries address common challenges such as climate change, food insecurity, and low agricultural productivity.

Officials from both nations described the agreement as a strategic step toward improving sustainable agriculture while leveraging technology and data-driven decision-making to increase food production and resilience across the sector.

The collaboration is expected to create new opportunities for research institutions, agribusinesses, and farmers through joint initiatives that encourage innovation and the exchange of technical expertise.

The deal reflects the growing economic and agricultural cooperation between Nigeria and Morocco as both countries seek to strengthen food security and promote sustainable agricultural development across Africa.
