The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has partnered with the ECOWAS Commission through the Regional Off-Grid Electricity Access Project (ROGEAP) to expand the deployment of clean energy technologies that will support farmers and agribusinesses across Nigeria and the West African region.
The initiative is designed to modernise agricultural production by promoting energy-efficient technologies that reduce dependence on diesel, improve food processing and storage, minimise post-harvest losses and strengthen food security.
Speaking at a national stakeholders’ workshop in Abuja, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, represented by Joseph Tegbe, said the productive use of energy is critical to unlocking growth in agriculture, industrialisation, financial inclusion, climate resilience and rural development.
He noted that inadequate access to reliable energy continues to limit agricultural productivity, with many farmers unable to access cold storage, processing facilities and other productive equipment needed to add value to their produce.
According to him, the partnership seeks to address these challenges by promoting renewable energy solutions that can power agricultural enterprises, reduce operating costs and improve the competitiveness of rural businesses.
The REA said the programme will support the adoption of productive-use technologies across agricultural value chains, enabling farmers, processors and small businesses to improve productivity while creating jobs and expanding economic opportunities.
The workshop brought together government agencies, development partners, private sector operators and other stakeholders to explore strategies for accelerating clean energy adoption in agriculture and strengthening regional food systems.
