Ghana midfielder Kwasi Sibo has backed coach Carlos Queiroz to lead the Black Stars to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations glory.
The four-time African champions have gone 44-years without the AFCONtrophy since last clinching the title in Libya in 1982.
After failing to qualify for the 2025 tournament hosted in Morocco, the 2010 FIFA World Cup quarterfinalists will turn their attention to the 2027 qualifiers, which begin in September.
Sibo, who has been capped 12 times at the senior level, played all four matches in Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup participation in Mexico, Canada and the USA and has dreams of winning the AFCON title.
“There is always one thing that I want to feel in my heart, and I want the nation to feel in their heart, it’s to win a cup for the nation,” Zibo told 3Sports.
“I think it’s been ages since Ghana won the cup, and now AFCON is coming and I want that dream to manifest.
The 28-year-old, who recently parted ways with relegated Spanish La Liga side Real Oviedo, expressed belief in coach Carlos Queiroz and the technical team to lead the squad to the AFCON title in Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya next year.
“I believe in the team; I believe in the coaching staff of Carlos Queiroz, that he can let that dream happen for every Ghanaian who has been waiting for ages to see Ghana win the cup, so that’s my dream.”
Ghana is paired in Group C alongside three-time African champions Ivory Coast, The Gambia and Somalia for the qualifiers that begin in September.
Carlos Queiroz’ uncertain future with Black Stars
Carlos Queiroz signed a four-month contract in April, filling the void created by the departure of former Ghana international Otto Addo, who qualified the team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Portuguese supervised a win, one draw, and two losses as the Black Stars progressed beyond the group stage for the first time since reaching the quarter-finals in South Africa 2010.
The Black Stars defeated Panama 1-0 in the opening Group L game before holding England to a goalless draw and a 2-1 loss against Croatia to qualify as one of the third-best teams with four points.
Ghana, however, succumbed to Colombia in the round of 32, losing 1-0 against the Coffee Growers to exit the tournament. With his contract set to expire in August, it remains to be seen if Ghana will extend his contract as the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers approach.
