Feature expands AI Mode beyond search by allowing users to complete tasks across supported third-party apps

Google has announced a new update for AI Mode that allows users to connect select third-party apps and complete tasks without leaving the conversational search experience. The feature is rolling out to users in the US and initially supports Instacart, Canva, and YouTube Music.

With the latest addition, AI Mode moves beyond answering questions and generating information by enabling users to interact with connected apps directly. The company says it plans to add support for more services in the future.

What users can do with connected apps

Google says users can link supported apps to AI Mode and perform specific tasks using natural language prompts.

For instance, someone planning a barbecue can ask AI Mode to prepare a grocery list. Once their Instacart account is connected, AI Mode can add the required ingredients directly to their shopping cart, allowing them to complete the purchase through the Instacart app or website.

Similarly, users working on a presentation or marketing material can ask AI Mode for design suggestions. After connecting Canva, the AI assistant can display relevant templates that match the user’s request.

The update also extends to YouTube Music. Users can ask AI Mode to create a playlist for an event or activity and save it directly to their YouTube Music account.

    Expansion of Google’s AI ecosystem

The announcement builds on Google’s broader efforts to make its AI services more useful by integrating them with third-party platforms. Earlier this year, the company introduced similar app connections in the Gemini app, allowing users to access services such as Canva, OpenTable, Spark, and Instacart to complete tasks more efficiently.

Google has also been steadily expanding AI Mode since its launch in early 2025. Recent additions include the ability to check whether products are available at nearby stores and a side-by-side web exploration feature that lets users compare information while maintaining the context of their search.

Earlier this year, Google also introduced “Personal Intelligence” for AI Mode, enabling it to access users’ Gmail and Google Photos to deliver more personalised responses.

With app integrations now arriving in AI Mode, Google is positioning its conversational search experience as a platform that not only provides information but also helps users complete everyday tasks across multiple services. The move also places AI Mode in closer competition with AI assistants such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude, both of which already support integrations with third-party applications.
