    • Despite the modest increase in nominal retail sales, inflation-adjusted spending was solid, supporting stronger Q2 consumer spending and GDP growth.
    • Despite the modest increase in nominal retail sales, inflation-adjusted spending was solid, supporting stronger Q2 consumer spending and GDP growth.
    • The 0.2% m/m gain in nominal retail sales was held back by a sharp decline in gasoline station sales as prices at the pump retreated from May’s peak.
    • Meanwhile, strong spending on sporting goods—boosted by the FIFA World Cup—and robust online sales, aided by the earlier timing of Amazon Prime Day, supported overall retail activity.
    • The June report supports The Conference Board’s forecast for real consumer spending to accelerate to 1.5% q/q SAAR in Q2 2026 from 0.5% in Q1.
    • Nevertheless, we remain cautious on the consumer outlook for the second half of the year, as some of June’s strength likely reflected temporary factors that could reverse in July.
