Malawi is set to make history at the 2026 TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. For the first time, the national team, known affectionately as “The Scorchers,” will step onto the pitch as Africa’s premier women’s football competition.

It is a landmark moment that represents years of hard work and growth for the country’s football program.

The road to Morocco was a memorable one. After receiving a bye in the first round of qualifying, Malawi faced a tough challenge against Angola. Following a tight 0-0 draw away from home, the Scorchers secured their ticket to the finals with a brilliant 2-0 victory in the return leg.

The hero of that historic day was 19-year-old midfielder Faith Chinzimu, who scored both goals

In Morocco, the Scorchers have been drawn into a challenging Group C. They will face off against reigning champions Nigeria, regional rivals Zambia, and a strong Egypt side. While many see Malawi as the underdog in this group, the team is entering the tournament with significant momentum. Their recent success, including winning the 2023 COSAFA Women’s Championship, has given the squad the confidence needed to compete against Africa’s best.

Much of the team’s recent success is credited to their coach, Lovemore Fazili. A former Malawi men’s international, Fazili, has used his wealth of experience to transform the women’s side.

Having previously managed the nation’s men’s youth and senior teams, he brings a high level of tactical discipline and leadership to the women’s game.

On the pitch, all eyes will be on the young star, Faith Chinzimu. Despite being only 19, the Sweden-based midfielder has already become the heart of the team. During the qualifying campaign, she stepped up to lead the squad, proving that she can perform under pressure when it matters most.

Her creativity and ability to find the back of the net will be vital for Malawi as they navigate their tough group.

This debut tournament is more than just a series of matches for Malawi; it is a chance to measure their progress on the continental stage.

Regardless of the results in Group C, the Scorchers have already secured their place in history. As they begin this new chapter, the team is ready to play with passion, represent their nation with pride and show the world Malawi is rising in women’s football.
