Chidimma Adetshina heads to court in bid to stop deportation

The legal battle surrounding former Miss South Africa contestant and Miss Universe Nigeria, Chidimma Adetshina, is set to take another significant turn when she appears in the Cape Town Regional Court on Monday to oppose efforts to deport her from South Africa.

The high-profile case has attracted national attention, blending questions of immigration law with a story that has remained in the public eye since Adetshina’s pageant journey became the subject of intense public debate.

A case rooted in an ongoing immigration dispute

Adetshina was taken into custody in Cape Town last month after authorities alleged that she was living in South Africa without legal status. Her court appearance now marks the next stage in determining whether the state can proceed with her deportation.

The matter follows earlier action by the Department of Home Affairs, which revoked the South African identity documents belonging to both Adetshina and her mother after they failed to provide satisfactory reasons for why the documents should remain valid.

The identity documents were withdrawn as part of an investigation into their legal status, an issue that has continued to follow the former beauty queen since questions first emerged about her nationality.

Controversy stretches back to the Miss South Africa pageant

Long before the current court proceedings, Adetshina found herself at the centre of widespread public discussion during the Miss South Africa competition.

As debate over her citizenship intensified across the country, she ultimately withdrew from the pageant. She later went on to compete in Nigeria, where she was crowned Miss Universe Nigeria, a move that shifted her pageant career but did little to end the scrutiny surrounding her legal status in South Africa.

The latest court proceedings now move the conversation away from beauty pageants and into the legal arena, where immigration laws and official documentation will be closely examined.

    Home Affairs details investigation

The Department of Home Affairs has confirmed that investigators, supported by the South African Police Service (SAPS), recently detained Adetshina’s mother, Anabela Rungo, at a property in Cape Town.

According to the department, Rungo’s South African documentation was cancelled after officials concluded that it had been obtained fraudulently. As a result, Home Affairs says she no longer qualifies to reside in South Africa using those documents.

Authorities further allege that despite being declared an undesirable person, Rungo remained in the country by using a Mozambican passport. Officials say investigations into additional allegations of fraud and misrepresentation are still underway.

    Child welfare also under review

During the operation, investigators reportedly found Adetshina’s underage child living with Rungo.

Home Affairs says it has since partnered with the Department of Social Development and the SAPS Child Protection Unit to ensure that the child’s welfare remains a priority while legal processes continue.

The department also confirmed that once immigration procedures involving Rungo are completed, she is expected to be handed over to SAPS because she remains the subject of an ongoing investigation by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation.
