    Fiber-to-the

The USA is making major progress on fiber broadband, but there’s still a lot of work to be done on FTTx rollout.

According to the Fiber Broadband Association’s 2025 deployment survey, U.S. providers passed 11.8 million homes with fiber in 2025, bringing total FTTH passings to 98.3 million and coverage to more than 60% of U.S. households.

However, the same report notes that around 60 million potential first-time fiber passings remain. In other words, the market has momentum, but remaining builds are often rural, harder to permit, more expensive, and more exposed to labor and supply constraints.

    Supply chain, workforce constraints

Labor and supply constraints are becoming an ever-bigger issue. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce Office of Inspector General, simultaneous nationwide broadband deployment could exacerbate “supply chain and labor market” shortages.

In its interviews, 69% of broadband offices raised supply-chain concerns, while industry stakeholders warned that limited access to fiber materials and trucks could push installation timeframes to 18 months or longer.

Workforce pressure is equally serious: the same report says one stakeholder estimated the country will need about 205,000 fiber technicians for Broadband Equity Access and Deployment (BEAD) demand. At the same time, telecom employment fell 29% between January 2014 and January 2024.

The data center boom adds another layer of competition. Reuters reported on Meta signing an agreement worth up to $6 billion for fiber-optic cables for AI data centers. In contrast, Amazon signed a multi-billion-dollar deal to boost U.S. optical fiber and connectivity production for data centers. These are positive investments in domestic capacity, but they also show how hyperscale AI infrastructure is competing for the same fiber, components, factories and skilled people needed for public broadband.

One practical response is to industrialize FTTx deployment using the plug-and-play logic common in data centers. Preterminated, factory-tested fiber assemblies reduce dependency on scarce field-splicing expertise, cut on-site errors and make planning more predictable. Preterminated solutions can halve overall installation costs and accelerate deployment by 70%, especially in urban areas.

For operators, it’s possible to use a completely integrated modular preterminated architecture from the central office or headend to the distribution point, drop, and customer premises. Factory-tested distribution boxes, hardened outdoor connectors, preconfigured splitters, and plug-and-play drops can be mounted with standard tools, often without field splicing. Modular designs also simplify repair, replacement, expansion and maintenance.

In a market where capital is available but fiber, crews and time are constrained, the winning FTTx model will be the one that reduces skilled labor per home passed while improving quality and repeatability.
