The philosophy behind Victor Wanyama’s modern approach to coaching

Having retired from professional football in April, the former Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton midfielder has now transitioned his career focus to coaching.

Victor Wanyama, the former captain of Harambee Stars, has shared insights into the coaching methodologies he plans to implement in his post-playing career.

He is presently working towards his UEFA A Coaching License, having obtained his UEFA B License in May 2025 during his active playing days.

To further his development, Wanyama has spent the off-season collaborating with a squad of uncontracted players and a chosen group from various clubs. These sessions serve to refine his coaching techniques and accumulate hands-on experience.

Following an exhibition match involving Friends of Kizza and Friends of Wanyama and Mariga, in which he participated as both a coach and a player, the 35-year-old disclosed the football style he intends for his future teams.

“My way of training as a coach is different. I believe in short and intense training sessions. They achieve the purpose while keeping the sessions enjoyable.

Coaching is dynamic, and my ideas may evolve with time, but I like my teams to play with short build-ups and expose the opponent’s structure,” he said.

The former Harambee Stars captain, known for his relentless midfield performances throughout a career that included stints at Celtic and CF Montréal, asserts that physical conditioning is fundamental to any thriving team.

“You have to be fit. If you are not fit, it becomes very difficult to play. You can have all the talent in the world, but without fitness it is hard to perform. That is why I place a lot of emphasis on player fitness,” he added.

Wanyama’s coaching philosophy is also anticipated to be implemented at the Wanyama Football Academy, which is presently under construction.

This academy is poised to be instrumental in cultivating the upcoming generation of football talent in Kenya.
