On Mandela Day, more than 5 000 people from Johannesburg’s inner city gathered to break bread in Education Town. For many, it was a warm meal. For others, it was a moment of connection, dignity, and hope.
But while thousands of meals were shared, the day was about far more than feeding people. It was about bringing together communities from every background to live out one of Nelson Mandela’s greatest beliefs, that our shared humanity is stronger than the things that divide us.
The Chevrah Kadisha, the Jewish National Fund South Africa (JNF SA), the South African Union of Jewish Students, the Union of Jewish Women, and the South African Jewish Board of Deputies participated in this special event.
Alongside partners from many different sectors and faith communities, they demonstrated the enduring Jewish values of tzedakah, the pursuit of justice through compassionate giving, and tikkun olam, our shared responsibility to help repair the world.
Education Town is the vision of Dr Taddy Blecher, co-founder and chief executive of the Maharishi Invincibility Institute (MII), whose lifelong mission has been to unlock human potential through education. Built around MII, Education Town has become one of South Africa’s most innovative education ecosystems. For more than two decades, it has demonstrated what is possible when education is combined with the development of consciousness, well-being, entrepreneurship, industry partnerships, and an unwavering belief in the potential of every young person.
As Blecher often says, “Every human being has unlimited potential. The purpose of education is to awaken it.”
It is this belief that sits at the heart of Education Town and reflects Nelson Mandela’s conviction that “education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”.
This year’s Mandela Day brought that vision to life through Breaking Bread in the Inner City, where corporate partners, volunteers, students, and staff prepared and served more than 5 000 nutritious meals. The remaining meals were taken to surrounding communities, homeless shelters, and schools, ensuring that nothing went to waste and that even more people experienced care and dignity. Alongside the meals, 2 000 blankets were distributed, offering not only warmth during Johannesburg’s winter, but a tangible reminder to people that they had not been forgotten.
The day also featured Playing with Purpose, soccer, netball, and basketball games at Maharishi Standard Bank Field of Dreams, the first inner-city soccer field in more than 50 years. These moments of play reminded participants that meaningful relationships are often built not only through serving one another, but through sharing experiences.
In a country often defined by its divisions, Mandela Day offers a different picture of South Africa, namely people of different faiths, backgrounds, and organisations standing shoulder to shoulder, united by a simple belief that every person deserves dignity, opportunity, and hope.
Mandela Day reminds us that generosity is measured not only by what we give, but by what we build together. While sharing a meal meets an immediate need, investing in education changes generations.
Perhaps that is Nelson Mandela’s greatest legacy, not that we dedicate 67 minutes to service each year, but that we choose, every day, to build a society where every person has the opportunity to thrive.
At MII that work continues long after Mandela Day has passed. Every student who graduates, every young entrepreneur who starts a business, every partnership that opens a door, and every life transformed through education becomes another chapter in Mandela’s enduring legacy.
Because while a meal can change someone’s day, education can change their life.
