From winning the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to conquering Europe with top clubs and inspiring generations of Nigerian footballers, these legends have earned their place in history. While every fan may have a different opinion on who deserves the top spot, the players on this list stand out for their impact, consistency, and unforgettable contributions to Nigerian football.
Here are the top 10 Super Eagles legends of all time, in no particular order:
Widely regarded as Nigeria’s most naturally gifted footballer, Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha dazzled fans with his incredible dribbling, creativity, and flair. He represented Nigeria at three FIFA World Cups and won the 1994 AFCON title. His performances for clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain, Qatar FC, Fenerbahce, and Bolton Wanderers made him a global icon. Okocha inspired countless young footballers with his entertaining style of play.
One of Africa’s most decorated footballers, Kanu enjoyed a remarkable career despite overcoming a serious heart condition early on. He won the UEFA Champions League with Ajax, Premier League titles with Arsenal, and the UEFA Cup with Inter Milan. Internationally, he captained Nigeria and played a key role in the country’s historic 1996 Olympic gold medal triumph. He was also named African Footballer of the Year twice.
Rashidi Yekini remains Nigeria’s all-time leading goalscorer for the Super Eagles, with 37 international goals. He led Nigeria to its first AFCON title in the modern era in 1994 and scored the country’s first-ever FIFA World Cup goal, celebrating by holding onto the net in one of football’s most iconic moments. He was crowned African Footballer of the Year in 1993. He also played for clubs such as Al Shabab, CA Bizertin, and FC Zurich.
Nicknamed “The Big Boss,” Stephen Keshi was one of Africa’s greatest defenders and captains. He led Nigeria to victory at the 1994 AFCON and later became one of the few people in history to win the tournament as both a player and a coach when he guided Nigeria to the 2013 AFCON title. His leadership transformed Nigerian football. He also played for several clubs across Africa, Europe, and the United States, including ACB Lagos, New Nigerian Bank, Lokeren, and Anderlecht.
Arguably Nigeria’s greatest goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama earned over 100 international caps and represented the country at three FIFA World Cups. His outstanding performances, particularly at the 2010 and 2014 World Cups, earned worldwide praise. He also captained the Super Eagles and won the 2013 AFCON. He played for professional clubs like Ibom Stars, Enyimba, Maccabi Tel Aviv and Lille.
Known as “Mathematical” for his intelligent style of play, Segun Odegbami was one of Nigeria’s greatest wingers. He was instrumental in Nigeria’s first AFCON triumph in 1980 and remains among the country’s highest international goalscorers. His pace, dribbling, and goals made him a legend of his generation.
“The Bull” was known for his strength, speed, and powerful finishing. Amokachi starred in Nigeria’s golden generation, winning the 1994 AFCON and helping the Dream Team win Olympic gold in 1996. He also enjoyed successful spells with Club Brugge, Everton, and Beşiktaş.
A commanding defensive midfielder, Sunday Oliseh combined tactical intelligence with thunderous long-range shots. He played a vital role in Nigeria’s Olympic gold-winning team in 1996 and was among the standout midfielders of his era. His memorable goal against Spain at the 1998 FIFA World Cup remains one of Nigeria’s greatest World Cup moments. He played for top-tier European clubs, including Ajax, Juventus, and Borussia Dortmund.
Ahmed Musa is Nigeria’s most-capped player and one of only a few Africans to score in multiple FIFA World Cups. His unforgettable brace against Iceland at the 2018 World Cup remains one of the greatest performances by a Nigerian player on football’s biggest stage. His longevity and commitment have made him a modern Super Eagles legend. He played for professional clubs, including Al-Nassr, Leicester City, VVV-Venlo, and Kano Pillars.
Nicknamed the “Prince of Monaco,” Victor Ikpeba enjoyed an outstanding club career with AS Monaco, winning the French league title and later being crowned African Footballer of the Year in 1997. He was an important member of Nigeria’s 1994 AFCON-winning squad and the 1998 FIFA World Cup team. He played for top clubs, including AS Monaco and Borussia Dortmund.
