Cabo Verde/Portugal: Cabo Verde a hub for business to enter Africa, Europe – presidents
The heads of state of Portugal and Cabo Verde on Wednesday backed the archipelago as a platform for businesses to enter West Africa and Europe.
«We must build a two-way Atlantic platform,» said António José Seguro at the opening of the Cabo Verde–Portugal Economic Forum on the second day of his state visit to the country.
Cabo Verde can «bring Portuguese companies closer to West Africa. Portugal can facilitate access for Cabo Verdean companies to the European market», he said.
This idea was echoed by his counterpart, José Maria Neves.
«Businesspeople cannot continue to view Cabo Verde as a small market, but rather as a business platform in this region, a gateway to the whole of West Africa», he pointed out.
He added, «This is an essential element in creating a new agenda, based on Cabo Verde’s competitive position within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).»
With regard to bilateral relations, both heads of state agreed that an excellent relationship must yield excellent results.
«We need to move from trade to strategic partnerships. To transform trade into productive investment. And to steer this relationship towards better results,» said Seguro.
«The first challenge is implementation,» he added, referring to the agreements signed at the 7th Bilateral Summit, held in Lisbon in January 2025.
Among these, a credit line of up to €100 million for business projects is being prepared, along with a €42.5 million mechanism for converting debt into climate investment, enabling Portugal to participate in the Climate and Environmental Fund established by Cabo Verde.
«These instruments must reach businesses and translate into projects, jobs, exports and better living conditions,» he concluded.
Before the opening of the business forum, the second day of Seguro’s visit to Cabo Verde began with a formal session at parliament.
The rest of the day also included a meeting with the prime minister, Francisco Carvalho, the presentation of the keys to the city of Praia at the city hall in the capital, and a lunch hosted on board the Portuguese Navy ship Bartolomeu Dias.
There will also be a visit to the Museum of the Resistance in Tarrafal, where the two presidents will lay a wreath in memory of the victims of the concentration camp that existed there during the Portuguese colonial regime.
The day will conclude with a visit to Cidade Velha, the cradle of the Cabo Verdean nation and a site included on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation’s (UNESCO) World Heritage List.
