The Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO), represented by a delegation from its Department of Culture, is participating in the 48th  Session of the World Heritage Committee, held in the Republic of Korea from 19 to 29 July 2026. The session brings together States Parties to the 1972 Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, alongside experts and representatives of relevant international organizations.

ALECSO’s participation reflects its longstanding commitment to safeguarding Arab cultural heritage and strengthening its contribution to international efforts aimed at its protection. It also highlights the Organization’s continued support for Arab countries in implementing the World Heritage Convention, promoting the inscription of Arab sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and addressing the growing challenges facing heritage, including armed conflicts, climate change, and unplanned urban expansion.

The ALECSO delegation, comprising Dr. Humaid Al-Nofali, Director of Culture, and Mr. Abdelhadi Ghemari, Coordinator of Projects and Programmes in the Department of Culture, is taking part in the Committee’s plenary sessions and technical meetings. Discussions focus on the state of conservation reports for several World Heritage sites in Arab countries, the examination of new nomination files, and consultations with representatives of Arab States and international advisory bodies on best practices for heritage site management and the preservation of their Outstanding Universal Value.

Through its participation, ALECSO continues to promote Arab coordination in the field of heritage and foster the exchange of expertise with international and regional partners. These efforts contribute to strengthening national capacities and advancing sustainable approaches to heritage conservation, in line with ALECSO’s firm belief that cultural heritage is a cornerstone of Arab identity and a key driver of sustainable development.
