Royal African Society marks 125 years of UK-Africa partnership
The Royal African Society on Wednesday marked its 125th anniversary with a high-profile gathering of political, business and investment leaders in London, United Kingdom, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening economic and commercial ties between Africa and the UK.
The anniversary event, held at the London Stock Exchange, featured the Closing of Markets Ceremony and ringing of the exchange’s closing bell, alongside high-level sector discussions, fireside chats, the presentation of philanthropy awards and the unveiling of the Top African Brands in the UK and Top British Brands in Africa.
The organisers said the celebration was aimed at deepening collaboration between Africa and the UK while promoting investment, innovation and shared prosperity.
Chairperson of the Royal African Society, Arunma Oteh, said the organisation had spent 125 years fostering partnerships between both regions.
She said, “For 125 years the Royal African Society has served as a bridge between Africa and the United Kingdom, bringing together academia, leaders, innovators, investors, artists and policymakers to build strong partnerships founded in mutual respect and shared opportunity.”
Oteh added that the anniversary celebrated the society’s rich legacy while looking ahead to Africa’s growing global influence and future opportunities.
The event brought together the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II; President and Chief Executive Officer of Africa Finance Corporation, Samaila Zubairu; Chief Executive Officer of British International Investment, Leslie Maasdorp; Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Flutterwave, Olugbenga “GB” Agboola; Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Royal African Society, Stella Okotete; and other business, diplomatic and policy leaders.
According to the organisers, the anniversary reinforced London’s role as a gateway for African capital while providing a platform for dialogue and strategic partnerships between investors, policymakers and business leaders from Africa and the United Kingdom.
