Bar Council of India (BCI) Chairman and Rajya Sabha MP Manan Kumar Mishra on Thursday issued a public appeal to the country’s legal fraternity, academicians, professionals and intellectuals, urging them to counter what he described as “anti-social and anti-national forces” allegedly attempting to exploit ongoing student protests to destabilise the country.
In a press release titled“An Appeal to the Intellectuals of the Country”, Mishra alleged that innocent students were being misled and that their agitation had been taken over by elements working against the nation’s interests.
“As the representative of Indian Bar, I appeal to the entire legal fraternity and to all intellectuals and prudent citizens… to step forward and help safeguard the nation,” the statement reads.
According to the BCI Chairman, “Foreign adversaries are acting with the intent to destabilize India, and innocent students are being misled and misused. Anti-social and anti-national forces have hijacked their agitation.”
The statement further alleged that certain politicians with “foreign loyalties” were provoking younger generations into lawlessness.
“It appears that a few politicians, particularly one or two individuals with foreign loyalties… are cunningly instigating and provoking younger generations to foment lawlessness,”Mishra said, adding that such persons had“no genuine concern for the peace and prosperity of our Bharat.”
The press release also claimed that one such politician had close links with foreign financier George Soros and alleged that foreign funds were being channelled through certain political parties to destabilise India. However, no evidence was cited in the statement to substantiate these allegations.
Mishra further alleged that individuals from Jammu & Kashmir and other States had been brought to Delhi to facilitate violence during the protests.
“Experts in stone pelting have been brought from Jammu and Kashmir and other states into Delhi… These miscreants are reportedly paid substantial sums to create disorder, assault police personnel, and damage public vehicles and property,” the statement claimed.
He also alleged that coordinated social media campaigns were being run from abroad in collusion with certain political parties to spread misinformation among Indian youth.
Calling upon lawyers, teachers, doctors, journalists, engineers, scientists, entrepreneurs and other professionals, Mishra urged them to actively promote constitutional values, fact-based public discourse and peaceful democratic participation.
The statement emphasised that educational institutions should encourage informed dialogue rather than allowing students to be drawn into violence, while parents and guardians should ensure that young people are not exploited for unlawful purposes.
“Students must be told that violence, destruction and assault can never be justified as democratic participation,” the statement said.
In the concluding portion of the appeal, Mishra asserted that genuine student protesters do not resort to violence or destruction of public property and alleged that the ongoing protest had been “completely hijacked by malicious elements.”
“Meaningful politics can occur only when the nation is secure. Any type of disruptive elements are not genuine protesters, they are destroyers… This so-called protest has been completely hijacked by malicious elements whose objectives differ from those of genuine students,” he stated.
Appealing for restoration of public order, Mishra urged lawyers, student leaders, political parties and law enforcement agencies to work together to restore peace through lawful means.
“I urge lawyers, student leaders, political parties and law enforcement agencies to cooperate constructively, speak truth to the youth, dissuade them from violence, and pursue lawful channels to restore calm,” the statement concluded.
